2011 Golden Globe Awards Ricky GervaisWith a sip of his beer and a barrage jokes, Ricky Gervais left the audience of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards speechless.  Promising to “notch it up” for this year’s show, the comedian certainly didn’t disappoint his fans – though he did manage to anger many on Hollywood’s A-List and the awards show organizers.

Disappearing from the stage for nearly an hour during the ceremony, many speculated that the host had been fired midway through the broadcast [via The Telegraph].

“Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the show’s going pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?” Robert Downy Jr. asked the audience.

Ricky introduced the ‘Iron Man’ star, saying, “… Many of you in this room probably know [Robert Downey Jr.] from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.”

Ricky also took a dig at the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association President, Philip Berk, saying, “I had to help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in.”  The HFPA President later replied, “No comment,” when asked if he would invite Ricky back to host the Golden Globe Awards for the third year in a row.

  1. I think he went WAYYYYYYY too far for me when he said “I want to thank God for making me atheist”. I really however did not know anything about the guy and now don’t have to worry about learning any more. He is not important to me now.

  2. ^^^ lol, religious tool

  3. I think he did a decent job. If you hire Ricky to host a show.. you cannot then go crying that his jokes were mean… thats what he does.. and they were funny.

And to counter Rusty above.. I thought his athiest joke was funny and sorry it was cut off a bit at the end.

  4. Many of the comments were not only mean-spirited, but just not funny. They were borderline reality TV, which is where Ricky may be now. His final comment was so not appropriate that I thought he should be resigned to some deep soul searching. Atheism is a choice and in America we must respect people’s choices, but when they use a venue like this to denounce religion, well, it shows he is no longer together and needs some professional help. He may be the subject of next year’s monologue.

  5. I think he dad a fantastic job. Hollywood stars need to get over themselves.
PS. If you watch the crowd reactions, established veteran actors like Deniro, Pacino, and Spacey were on the floor laughing, it’s just the new blood that’s so up tight. Go figure.

  6. No he didn’t go too far at all…the biggest joke is how much money all these actors, producers, directors get. It’s comedy, you make light of situations and people. It’s ok for Robert Downey to joke about having sex with female nominees though I guess, huh? Because he’s so cool and handsome…

  7. Definetly gringos doesn’t have a good sense of humor…this guy is the best host ever…te amo Ricky ! u’re the best…

  8. I think he did a bloody brilliant job. GO Ricky ! We are proud of you !

  9. A brilliant host…and the reactions just highlight the inability of Americans to laugh at themselves..They should follow Rickys lead and lighten up

  10. Marion Conklin says:

I’m a huge fan of Ricky, and after all he is a comedian who makes fun of others. But maybe it’s me that’s changing but I didn’t care for his mean-spirited digs at others mistakes. Once I put myself in the shoes of some of them (Robert Downey Jr., Tim Allen) or the shoes of their family, I began to second-guess my opinion of him. The joke about the of President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association wasn’t necessary. I think Ricky knew going into it he would be burning bridges in Hollywood and risk being blackballed from the business and I don’t think he cared, so I give him kudos for bravery. I was hugely disappointed with his atheist comment at the end…I wish they would have killed his mike before I heard it.

  11. I did not like his ” off the wall ” comments. I prefer someone like Fallon who is funny and NOT insulting…

  12. Ricky Gervais is brilliant! I love him and for every fan he lost or celeb he annoyed, he made 10 new fans I’m sure.
Basically, if you don’t want an in your face comedian and prefer an a**licker who is happy to boost the already inflated egos of the Hollywood elite… don’t hire a Brit!
Hollywood can do with a bit of non-sycophantic rubbing up the wrong way to remind them they are still mere mortals.
I don’t even think he does it to be mean, I think the brits just laugh at themselves more. I didn’t notice Helen Mirren or Helena Bonham carter,(both in the audience) getting annoyed by anything. Also, people like Robert Downey Jr HAVE been in jail, he’s not making anything up!
Maybe, in his non-American innocence, he thought America had a) free speech and b) a sense of humor. They are his only mistakes!
