Serena Williams Hospitalized for Pulmonary Embolism and Hematoma

Tennis star Serena Williams has been hospitalized Monday for a hematoma, People Magazine reports. Serena attended Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party Sunday night before the 29 year-old’s health took a turn for the worse. Serena’s rep explained the situation in a statement:

“Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation. Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot. Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications.”

Because of a foot injury, Serena withdrew from from the 2011 Hopman Cup and 2011 Australian Open. She is still scheduled to play in the Miami Masters on March 22, 2011; there’s no word yet on whether her health conditions will prevent her from competing.

We’re all wishing you a speedy recovery, Serena!
