Wes Leonard had all the promise of being a professional athlete. He was a star on the Fennville High School basketball team and was quarterback of the football team.
Last night, Wes scored the game-winning shot in overtime to give his basketball the win they needed to secure his team’s perfect season. Seconds later he collapsed on the court.
As fans and teammates rushed to congratulate Leonard on his amazing shot, the 16 year old athlete fell to the ground and was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. Shortly after, he was pronounced dead.
Holland Hospital spokeswoman Deb Patterson confirmed the death but told reporters there was no cause of death determined at this time.
Wes is the second athlete from Fennville high to die in the last year and a half. 14 months ago, Nathaniel Hernandez, 14, died from a seizure at his home after participating in a high school wrestling match.
Leonard’s coach, Ryan Klinger, opened up about just how much potential the young boy had when he was interviewed on Tuesday. Having no idea of the circumstances about to erupt this week, Klinger told the Sentinel that Wes had a knack for “seeing the bigger picture.”
“That’s what makes him a little different. He takes care of his body better than probably anybody I’ve ever coached,” Klingler said. “Spends a lot of time on his own in the weight room. He’s a special kid.”
Heartbreaking.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Wes Leonard’s family and friends during this difficult time.
