Soap operas have been disappearing over the past few years – and ABC classic All My Children may be next. According to the New York Post, ABC did not deny a DeadlineHollywood report that claimed ABC would cut its daytime dramas, likely resulting in All My Children being cancelled.
“The deadline.com report is just another story in a long line of stories about this same topic,” an ABC spokeswoman said. ”The cancellation of ‘All My Children’] is talked about in the press every so often.” Okay, so it’s not officially dead, but she didn’t really give us much hope for its continued life, did she?
All My Children, which has featured Susan Lucci since it hit the airwaves in 1970, suffered a 34 percent ratings decline in women ages 18-49 the week of March 7, compared with that same week in 2010. With the networks scrambling to keep the eyes of that coveted demographic, many soaps – including Guiding Light and As The World Turns – have gone the way of the Dodo.
What might replace All My Children? There’s talk of a Tori Spelling talk show (say it isn’t so!!).
Will you be sad to see AMC go? I admit I watched it with my mother and sister back in the Sarah Michelle Gellar days…but now I only catch a silent scene or two at the gym. Are talk shows and lifestyle shows like Nate Berkus simply better than soaps? With the plummeting ratings, it looks as though nobody cares about soaps anymore!

Please, Please don’t cancel All My Children. I have watched from the very 1st show. Through the last 41 years, there have been some periods of not being able to watch, (job, out of the country). I always come back. Now with DVR I still watch. Not another talk show please, give viewers some choices in programs and don’t get on the talk show/reality show bandwagon!
Moving the show to Los Angeles sounded the death knell. It’s as if the network did it on purpose (decisions like this are not made overnight)–it was able to eliminate some people who chose not to make the move, which changed story lines, it bent over backwards to bring back some unlikeable characters/people because they have personal/strong ties to ABC (Rebecca Budig, that means you and it’s your 3rd marriage, not your 2nd). The difference between last March and this March was the presence/disappearance of Thorsten Kaye, who had the good sense to remain in NY and not join this sinking ship. The only real man on the show, gone. Cameron Mathison, phsst–yuk. Michael Knight is comic relief. Ricky Paul Goldin is gorgeous and a nice replacement but not enough. I’ve watched the show since the beginning but now silly, improbable storylines (how many times can “Annie” hallucinate a wedding? Why switch the very likeable actress who played Marissa for this Vicky Lawrence/Reba McEntire lookalike? Is she supposed to be sexy? No. And now suddenly turn lesbian? The preposterous antics of the David Hawyard character. Enough already.) Oh, and get rid of Damon and keep Asher? Is he supposed to be hunky? Also very unlikeable, no Q. Still, I will miss those 40 minutes each evening when I could forget my own troubles and get caught up in this guilty pleasure but it’s become a chore lately waiting for the storyline to catch fire. And this new dude, Griffin Castillo? His bit as super sure of himself registers a little too real to be likeable. If the rumors are true and the show is ending, I want to say thank you to the people who played the following characters in the last few years and made the best of the worst, and want to wish you luck and hope to see you in series television or movies because I won’t watch another soap. And in no particular order: Jessie, Angie, Frankie, Madison, Scott, Babe, Jamie, Adam, Tad, Jake, Amanda, Kendall, Zach, Spike, Ian, Bianca, Erica, Jack, Damon, Colby, Dixie, Myrtle, Opal, Crystal, Simone, JR, Annie (acting skills, not character), this new girl, Cara. AND if the show is really ending only to be replaced by a talk show hosted by Tori Spelling, ABC ought to be ashamed of itself. Are you f*!)ing kidding me?
Wow can’t believe it is being cancelled. What am I to do in the mornings during me time? I watch on soapchannel when I miss it. But please no more talk shows. Gonna miss all those who have been around for the years.
Please, don’t cancel All My Children. I have been watching for over 30 years and I would really miss it. It is true that many characters have left the show, and I don’t particularly like it but I have faith in the writers and hope they will be able to get back on track. Today’s world is much different than when I first started watching, and yes I do tape the show to watch at night. In today’s world of so many daily problems around the world and in our country, this was one escape I could plan on and look forward to watching. I do not watch any other Soap Opera and I really hope they don’t end up cancelling this one.
Soaps aren’t really dying…they just have to get better or they will die. Look at these figures for the top ten online viewed tv programs for jan. 2011. #2 and #8 are daytime soap operas. Doesn’t look like these shows are dying just yet.

All My Children needs to fire it’s current head writers. They’ve been there a year and look how bad things have got. They killed Guiding Light as their last head writers, why did they hire them?
Please don’t cancel All My Children!!! Have watched since the first day. No other daytime tv worth watching.
OMG I have watched All My Children since Erica was in high school. I have grown up with Tad and my children have grown up with Biance and Kendall. I record every episode and watch faithfully. I cannot imagine my days without going to Pinevalley on a regular basis.
I hope and pray AMC is not cancelled. But if it is – I will NOT be watching Tori Spelling! Yuck!
I hope All My Children won’t be
cancelled. I have been a fan since
Kim Delaney played Jenny. It will be
a shame if a talk show will replace
the soap.
Wow, another daytime talk show…why not just put another reality show on during daytime? Sad – but I will watch Fox News…I’m not in the 18-49 demigogue anyway; not sure why that age group is so desirable in daytime anyway. Aren’t they working or in school?
Please do not cancel AMC. I have watched it for years and record it when I am not going to be home. We don’t needd another talk show or game show!!!!
Please dont cancel All My Children Im a huge Huge fan… Im hooked i watches it everyday… I am willing to do what ever it takes to help Stop this from happening…WHAT CAN I DO TO SAVE MY ALL TIME BEST SOAP ON TV
I hope that the rumors aren’t true! I have been watching AMC since I was in high school, and it was a 30 minute show. If ABC cancels, I will NEVER watch a Tori Spelling talk show as replacement. YUK!! There are way too many bad talk shows already. And as far as reality programming is concerned, I hate, hate, hate, all of it! How about hiring some decent writers?? What ever happened to fiction? The world is such a mess that we need a little comic/dramatic relief, and AMC was always great at both. No Erika? No Tad? What a drag…
Thorsten Kaye is NEEDED on AMC! He and Kendall terriffic.
Michael Knight AWESOME actor! He and Cara SERIOUSLY?
Damon should be in PineValley!
Brook shouldn’t have been written off
DO NOT CANCEL!! Give better stories!
Susan Lucci and Walt Willy should finally be a couple and become touch stone for the show. I like Susan very much, but not every man on the canvas has to be with her. (Like Ryan and she huh?) Greelee and Ryan soulmates Rebecca great actress but does Ryan have to give EVERYONE a baby? Lord
Cancel AMC? Devasting! I’ve been a longtime fan since the ’80s, and I can’t wait to watch AMC every night when I get home from work. Some new characters have arrived, but I’ve gotten attached to them quickly. If ABC needs to cancel a soap, consider axing One Life to Live instead! AMC should stay on ABC!
so many woman have to work now days thats why raitings down. maybe you could run it in the evenings. I know I would watch because i faithfully watch it at night now please dont cancell just move to evenings
Cancel it, it’s the worst soap on ABC
please do not cancel AMC…like everyone else saids, ive been watching AMC since i was 12.. now im 49… its nice to see other drama then the in the world…watching the soaps gives us a peace of mind…it gives us me time..then when the kids come home from school, and husbands at night…their is no more me time..PLEASE!!!!! keep AMC on the air…the world is changing enough already, this is all we have, left from the good old days… SAD…
So ABC thinks the way to “improve” their viewers is to get rid of programs that FAITHFUL viewers have been watching for 40 years??? Let me get this straight – you’ve already lost Oprah = & now you’re getting rid of the two soaps.. Well, I should look at it this way. After “Good Morning America” is over, I’ll just switch to re-runs of Perry Mason * Cannon on Me-Too channel, & then turn off the tv for the rest of the day. I’ll get more done this way. Instead of getting rid of programs that have been followed for 40 years – why not get rid of your writers that don’t write good story lines for the actors!! But guess what? Even with the lousy story lines we tried and true fans continue to watch the dumb story lines hoping the writing will improve. We don’t dump our programs. Well – I know this has become a “throw away nation” – so now as you throw away these two soaps- you are also throwing away your faithful viewers. I WILL NOT watch another cooking show/how to show/or talk show. there are more than enough now. I’m sure even the big wigs at ABC have heard the saying, “Don’t fix what ain’t broke”. Those soaps were not broken, they just needed better writers. Instead you throw it away. How proud you must be of your “wise” choice. Come winter when I start to stay in the house more often, I will just pop in an old movie- NOT watch the inane “space fillers” that ABC will be trying to feed the viewers. I will tell you this – I gave up “General Hospital” about a year & a half ago because of the never ending violence in the story lines. There is enough violence in the real world (as well as my neighborhood) that I don’t want to see more of it on tv. Yes – I miss seeing those wonderful actors that play Sonny & Jason as well as a few others, but ABC got rid of the few living good actors they had & the others died off. So like I said – that means I will have the whole afternoon free – since I don’t see any thing I want to watch! Shame on your foolishness.
YOUR POLLSTERS ARE COMPLETELY WRONG WHEN THEY GIVE YOU THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO VIEW ALL MY CHILDREN. MOST WORKING PEOPLE TAPE YOUR SHOW AND THEN WATCH IT AFTER GETTING HOME FROM WORK. I HAVE WATCHEC AMC SINCE 1980, AND HAVEN’T MISSED AN EPISODE. IT MUST BE THAT YOU ARE OUT OF MONEY AND WANT TO FILL THIS TIME SLOT WITH SOME FOOLISH FOOD SHOW OR WHO KNOWS WHAT BECAUSE YOU JUST DON’T HAVE THE MONEY TO TO PRODUCE SOMETHING WORTHWHILE. YOU CAN BE SURE THAT AFTER YOU CANCEL AMC, I WILL HAVE NO REASON TO WATCH ABC ANY LONGER. IF I WANT TO WATCH SOMEONE COOK, THERE IS THE FOOD CHANNEL. REALITY SHOWS ARE PURE FOOLISHNESS. KEEP PRODUCING AMC AND YOU WILL AHEAD OF THE GAME. JUST REPLACE SUSAN LUCCI. YOU HAVE HAVE PEOPLE DIE OR LEAVE THE SHOW AND YOUR REPLACEMENTS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CARRY ON. THE BOZO WHO IS CANCELLING AMC REALLY DOES NOT KNOW YOUR VIEWING AUDIENCE OR KNOW WHO THEY ARE OR WANT TO WATCH. DOOOO NOT CANCEL ALL MY CHILDREN OR YOU CAN BE SURE I WILL NEVER VIEW ABC AGAIN, AS YOU BASICALLY HAVE NOTHING WORTH WATCHING. GOOD LUCK.
Very sad to see this show go, been watching this for years. I have been taking my lunch break with my Mother and have her hooked on the show as well. We were both very dissappointed when we heard it was cancelled. On the days we missed I recorded the show. Don’t want to see it go,but if it has to please give us all a happy ending.
I BEG YOU TO NOT CANCEL ALL MY CHILDREN. PLEASE ,PLEASE IT IS THE ONLY SOAP I WATCH. I HAVE BE WATCHING IT FOR YEARS AND I WOULD MISS IT SO VERY MUCH.
