Country meets Soul in Blake Shelton’s team with Patrick Thomas and Tyler Robinson. The song? Elvis “Burning Love.”
The rehearsals went fairly well. Tyler Robinson didn’t seem to know the song while Patrick Thomas was definitely a bit shell shocked to be standing in front of Reba McIntire. One thing happened worth noting – Tyler Robinson started the rehearsal making a bit of a mistake. He sang a little too hard and strong and Blake Shelton.
This was a MUCH better battle than Tarralyn Ramsey and Frenchie Davis I have to say. They were a lot more fun to watch, less catty with less errors in my opinion.
But who was better? In my opinion – Patrick Thomas DID NOT deserve to win. He just wasn’t as strong as Tyler and he didn’t sound as well. Also, every other judge thought he was amazing! Yet, he went home!

I was so unimpressed with what happened to tonight with Blake Shelton’s team. Disgusted actually! Tyler was definitely the stronger singer here. Looking at Patrick’s face you knew that he thought he had lost.. So why would they pick Patrick?

I totally agree with you! What happened there? I actually at one point felt bad for patrick because he looked so defeated, and I was like ‘wow that’s a really big sad face’. I was convinced he was going home. Serious bummer, tyler was obviously better than patrick. Makes me really mad!!
It is called homophobia. After Blake’s gay bashing tweets last weekend, I thought maybe he had learned his lesson, but this man has some serious problems. This man is not just anti-gay, he is just plain scared.

Mark Burnett and his team on The Voice should be ashamed of themselves. How can you call a tv show “The Voice” when it’s quite clear tthat pretty boy Patrick was out sung by the charismatic Tyler this evening. I’m so embarrassed for Blake Shelton, Mark Burnett and The Voice right now.

I totally agree with you James! Tyler was definitely robbed of his chance to remain in the competition. Tyler was able to sing circles around Patrick so why it is every other judge was honest enough to admit this but Blake! I have lost all respect for Blake (although I am a country fan, I have never heard of Blake prior to this show). I still can’t figure out what made Blake cop out the way he did – was it based on Patrick wanting to be a country singer or was it that Blake felt Patrick has that pretty ‘boy next door look’ that the young girls would go for? In any event, Blake is crazy!! I am glad there are other contestants I like on the show, otherwise, I would drop the show and stop watching it.

I totally agree with you on this, they may be looking for a certain specific thing when they choose the winners but this was a clear win for Tyler, he blew Patrick out of the water with his voice.

I can not believe that Tyler was not chosen as winner in this round. He clearly had the better voice and the better performance. If it was based on talent he should have won and if was based on Blake’s small minded homophobic beliefs then I am truly disappointed in him as a judge.

By far Tyler was better but Blake was looking for what he can market in my opinion. People who listen to country ( although not all ) tend to be very homophobic and Blake is better of working with your average boring country singing southern boy.

They pick Frenchie because she’s already kind of famous, they pick Patrick because Tyler is gay, and then Adam picks the hot chick instead of the guy with an interesting voice. Cee-Lo got it right so I’ll try another show but tonight was disappointing.

Blake really did play the country affiliation card. Patrick was good but Tyler was better. Tyler had it and the other judges knew. I lost a lot of respect for Blake. This was a battle round. The better person was to move on. That person was not Patrick. I honestly think Tyler being gay and Blake’s new song premiere had a part in Blake’s choice. Cant have the country community upset with you for booting a country guy for a non country gay guy the first round. Not good for music sales right Blake?
Mark Burnett and “The Voice” have just lost a viewer. I think it is contemptable that Shelton let his homophobic views cloud his judgement. Tyler was definitely the better singer. From now on it will be BODY OF PROOF for me.
I think that Tyler was the better singer and performer as did a couple of the other judges. What’s up with Blake? Even though he apologized for his anti-gay Twitter posts, he chose a less talented performer over an openly gay performer. Actions speak louder than words and his actions show that he is uncomfortable working with homosexuals.
The network needs to address this problem. It all goes back to what separates The Voice from other talent competitions – the “Blind Auditions”. By choosing a less talented straight singer over a more talented gay singer proves that once the blindfold has been removed, the same old prejudices that have plagued other talent competitions will come flooding back in.
Do not lose the uniqueness that surrounds The Voice. Keep the focus on a singer’s voice. Not their sexual orientation, appearance or age. Let’s make it purely about the music.

I am a country fan! I live for country music, but in no way was Patricks performance country last night. It was plain… Average to say the least! Tyler owned the song and the bottom line is, HE WAS THE BETTER VOICE! Blake is a homophob, he is no stranger to gay bashing (verbal) and while I once liked him as an artist, it’s getting a little hard to look past his lame personality.

I agree with most folks here, Blake Shelton messed up and picked the wrong guy. Maybe he was looking for more of a country tone, but that’s not what he told Tyler when he picked him in the first place. I don’t think the choice was really hard for Shelton. Whether it was the look or his being gay, Tyler never had a shot with Shelton. I’ll check out the Twitter tweets, but I just can’t believe that Aguilera would be part of a show that clearly is *not* about the voice. I’ve lost any shred of respect for Shelton after last night – I usually like his music, but now I can’t get past his character.

Shocked, Tyler was much the best-the rules of the show should be changed, for one Judge to decide who moves on puts a blemish on the purpose of the entire contest. Imagine if a young Elton John were in Tyler’s place, never got signed for a future recording contract and simply faded away, what a loss. As an artist, married to the same woman for forty years I have not once held a prejudice toward anyone based on race, color or creed-the fact is Blake didn’t choose Tyler because he was Gay.
I bet Blake is going to regret that when his team is the first kicked off the air during america votes part. I would have voted for Tyler. I hope Patricks the first to go home. I will not be supporting ANY of Blakes artists because of this.
Wow! I was having such a good time with this show…the antics and humour and huge talent.
But the only truly one-sided battle of the competition is Blake’s pairing, and he choses the wrong side? The ring stage was fitting, as just as in any tainted sports event, the outcome was predetermined. “The Voice” logo strangely looks as though it can at any time flip a bird at us. I think it did last night….to the audience and to the clear winner….Tyler. So maybe remove a finger and change the show’s name.
I believe that Blake didnt pick Tyler because of the fact that he was gay, and I am pretty sure if her had known that before hand, he prob. wouldnt had put him on his team at all. You can say the fact that Patrick has a country vibe may have played a part in Blakes choice, but the fact of the matter was that Patrick didnt bring anything special to the table with his singing. Yes he maybe more easy on the eyes, but Tyler clearly was more easy on the ears! Blake hasn’t learned from his gay bashing in the past, I can’t believe I liked this guy… Never again will I buy another Blake Shelton CD!!
Blake is on the wrong show. The VOICE is not American Idol. The VOICE is SUPPOSED to be about the VOICES of the contestants. This is what separates it from other shows. SO, it is beyond a shadow of a doubt that Tyler’s VOICE was the superior one and is the winner. Blake, shame on you!!!!!

I agree with the majority of the posts here. Tyler was the clear winner. His voice was stronger, his stage presence better and his originality with the song performance just outstanding! He made the song his own!

I agree with most of the above comments. Tyler should have won. He really did anyway. I love country too and I was almost positive Blake would choose away from Tyler. I lost respect for Blake too and will probably vote against him unless one of his singers is so outstanding that it wouldn’t be fair. Patrick is cute, and very country, but he’s pitchy as hell and doesn’t have the vocal talent in any way that Tyler does. I’m outta Blake Shelton from here on. He made a serious mistake this time and it will show. I’m pretty pissed about his choice.

When Blake Shelton turned around last week and saw whom he picked (a gay man) you could see the horror in his face. You could see him cringe when he gave Tyler a “forced’ hug. My wife and I commented on it immediately! And then comes his homophobic TWEET. And then last night—the elimination of TYLER, a GAY man who outperformed his opponent. I don’t know if it was homophobia or Blake just being biased toward wanting a country singer… but honestly, the whole thing read like a set up to me. Blake clearly WANTED to pick Patrick and EXPECTED Patrick to out-sing Tyler hands down. I mean, even the other coaches said they would have EXPECTED to pick Patrick, but based on the performance, they would pick Tyler… but I think Blake couldn’t get past his own plans. Which sucks because they both have great voices, but Tyler both took Blake’s notes/direction and then schooled Patrick in the performance. It was never fair from the outset. They need to figure out a way to make the battle rounds blind as well because this is BS. It’s no better than American Idol now that the blind auditions are over and it’s just as much about look/popularity/marketability and, clearly, not actually about “the voice”.
Why are you asking WHY did Blake pick Patrick….Patrick probably reminds him of himself starting out. Tyler was great, but Patrick is closer to what Blake is comfortable with. I was surprised too…But then if you think about it…..Is it strategy to pick the opposite of what the other team leaders felt??? Or, if the chairs were turned around, would it have been the same choice. Patrick is a looker and he looks like with a hat and boots, he’s all country…It’ll be fun to see where it goes!!!!

I really hope that there’d be second chance for eliminatees where judges/coaches will have a choice to pick up contestants that have been dumped by other judges. Tyler, if got picked, for sure will beat out Patrick in public-voting rounds.
The Voice is inappropriately named. Tyler overwhelmingly beat Patrick. Blake should be dismissed. The voice has lost a viewer for good.

I’m going to disagree with a few people here. I don’t think Tyler was the clear winner. When he sang the harmonies in the first verse his pitch was off and it was weak. Listen to the first notes out of his mouth & you’ll hear it. In my book that’s a big mark against him. However, he recovered well after that, and I think they both did a great job in their own styles, and I don’t think it was a clear cut win by either artist. For my taste, Tyler over sang it in a few places. Patrick wasn’t showy, but he was solid, and his pitch was perfect. I also prefer the overall tone of Patrick’s voice to Tyler’s tone.
But all this is my opinion, and that’s the whole point and the whole beauty of music. Music is about opinion. It’s about taste. Music is about what moves you, and that is not the same for everyone. If it wasn’t that way, we wouldn’t have all the different styles of music that exist. If it wasn’t that way, all 4 judges would have turned around for every artist that was picked. Am I surprised that Blake picked the country guy? Nope. Am I surprised the non-country coaches picked the non-country guy? Nope. We like what we like.
I would also speculate that they make their decisions about these people based on all their experiences with them, from auditions, to the practice, to the performance. We know that Patrick was fantastic in audition, with 3 coaches going for him, while Tyler was not, with only Blake turning his chair. We don’t know what he heard or saw during the practice session that stood out either.
Just because you didn’t like the choice he made doesn’t make it wrong, or about his sexual preference. That’s a very big, dangerous assumption to make about people you do not personally know. Be very careful when you judge and label people.
I personally disagree with 2 other choices the coaches made that night, but that doesn’t make those choices wrong either. It’s all opinion.
I think they both did a great job, and Blake picked the guy he wanted to work with. And I think Tyler is talented and a class act, and he’ll do well for himself.

How do you know what Blake was thinking when he turned around? Did Tyler have “GAY MAN” tattooed on him? How on earth would Blake even know?? The coaches weren’t in the back when the behind the scenes interviews were going on and he talked about being gay and a mormon. You are making a HUGE assumption here. And by the way, I didn’t see a look of horror on Blake, he laughed. Laughing = horror in your world?? And after he was turned, the last clip they showed of Blake his head was still bobbing to the singing.
Lots of the coaches looked surprised, shocked, or laughed when they turned around. Adam with Tim come to mind? He looked actually upset. Cee Lo had more than one of those moments, as did Christina. Haven’t you ever heard a voice and had a picture of who you think it is? Sometimes people just don’t look like what they sound like. So what?
Blake can’t like anyone who does a Miranda song, anyone who does a Blake song or anyone that is gay….time for him to go….
I also think that Tyler was IT!! No comparison. Whatever reason, no excuses. I also turned off the tv and could not watch any more. Don’t know if I can watch that show or listen to Blake Sheldon anymore. Too bad, and how stupid.

I watched The Voice for the first time ever tonight (on DVR). I only watched it through the point that Blake selected Patrick over Tyler. Wow, it was so clear that Tyler was the much stronger performer. Didn’t three other coaches make that clear? Blake, you just lost my respect (and I am actually a country music fan). Did you pick Patrick only because he’s a country guy? He’s not really that good! Totally weak. I turned The Voice off, deleted the rest of the episode and won’t watch it again. YOU blew it Blake. This wasn’t even a hard choice! You screwed Tyler. Very sad.
Blake Showed his disappointment when he saw Tyler. He apparently forgot why he picked him and the premise of the show. Tyler lost an opportunity because he was chosen by the wrong judge. He clearly was the winner. His voice was not only amazing but he owned that challenge. What a shame that he never stood a chance. Shame on Blake Shelton for his bias. I am not so sure that I will continue to watch a show that promoted such clear bigotry.
Watching the show, it really seemed that Blake Shelton was truly torn. I’m not saying that homophobia didn’t play a role in his decision, but he was also so picky with country singers during the blind audition, he didn’t end up with many on his team. He may have also been reluctant to cut the one real country singer so early.

I just got back from vacation so I just now got a chance to watch “The Voice” on Tivo. Tyler was the better choice. CLEARLY. All the other judges liked Tyler better as did the audience. I have NEVER been so angry to post a comment about something, but this is wrong. And to you HARRY… we live in a free country yes, so I can hate on Blake all I want. And tell you to learn how to spell before you tell anyone what or whom they should or shouldn’t leave alone. By the way a lot of people lke country, me being one of them. Blake clearly chose Patrick because of his looks. I thought “The Voice” was going to change such biased decisions like the one that Blake so obviously made. So disappointing. I believe Blake chose Patrick because he fits more into the mold of a country singer. For me and many others, Tyler was the better performance (and less of a country singer).
With coaching, Tyler’s second performance did improve , the judges that had passed on the first performance did recognize Tyler’s talent during the second performance. I do give Blake credit for giving Tyler a much better second performance in front of a national audience. And hopefully others in the music industry will notice.
