Lily Elise and Cherie Oakley went head to head today in a battle for Team Christina. The song was Kelly Clarkson’s “Since you’ve been gone.”
Now I didn’t have much of an opinion about either of them. So I had to do some background checking. Cherie Oakley, is the country girl of the group. She’s from Nashville and has been touring around as a backup singer with Carrie Underwood and Gretchen Wilson. She actually wrote a song for Reba “Turn on the Radio” that hit number one recently. The two met for the first time on tonight’s episode.
Twenty nine year old Lily Elise is in the Popular Music Program at USC. She didn’t make it through the first round of the blind audtion but was swooped up when on the second run by Christina.
When the battles started. It took a while to get it going. Lily Elise started off pretty shaky and their voices blended in an odd sort of way. I’m still not sure whether I liked it or not. Although, I can say that her high note was pretty amazing. She can definitely belt out those high notes. Although, when Cherie Oakley started singing – she blew me away. Her voice just sounded so much more polished and professional in my opinion.
But that’s not who Christina picked and to be honest, I’m a little blown away by her decision. I don’t even know what she was looking for – it was pretty obvious to me that Cherie Oakley WAS the better singer.
Should Cherie Oakley have been eliminated tonight?

Cherie, Your performance on The Voice tonight (5/31) was incredible. I am so disappointed that you were not selected to go forward. I agree with Tiffany; I thought you were the better singer tonight. I hope you’ll continue to pursue a solo career. You are a wonderful performer. Diana E
Diana – I agree. Cherie was the obvious winner, I couldn’t believe Christina didn’t select her. Her singing was always controlled, clear and beautiful – the other’s singing sounded like uncontrolled belting a lot of the time. It was very disappointing.
I disagree Lily Elise was by far the better singer and it goes to show thats why cherie got eliminated and thank god.
I triple agree with Diane and Sharon! Cherie was way better! Way more polished. Definitely surprised by Christina’s decision.
Same here… I was completely shocked that Christina chose Lily… She obviously wasn’t listening to the same performance as the rest of the country! Cherie was clearly the better singer, but I know she’s got a long career ahead of her, and I’m excited to see what doors this will open for her. She’s an amazing person and singer, and she deserves to step out of the spotlight and be a solo artist!
Heh, Aggie says she doesn’t know country. It’s worse than that. It’s obvious from her smug expressions, she detests anything remotely COUNTRY. I’m going to be BRUTALLY HONEST.
Lily was HORRIBLE. Made me cringe. Wrong notes..Wrong pitch. THis is supposed to be about THE VOICE…Acquillera proves again, she’ll do what she wants..Period and quite frankly, she thinks the show is about her. AND it’s the guys fault along with the producers.
Rebecca Loebe was eliminated a couple weeks back under a similar situation. True talent with musical finesse lost out to a no-talent off-key geek.
Conclusions” 1)The Voice should be renamed. “Christina Don’t Know Jack BUT thinks she does” Show 2) The guys on the show all act whipped/afraid to take on Christina anymore
3)The Voice is turned out to be WORSE than imagined and shouldn’t be renewed 4).My advice is to send a message to NBC and don’t watch it when it goes live/refuse to participate..Period.
An eye-opening sham. Other than Cici, the other three “judges” as a collective, are worthless. Good concept..P-POOR execution.
BTW, notice how quickly they cut from the decision?. I betcha’ the crowd erupted in boos at hearing Lily won out.
Farce…..Horrble. But so is Christina..She sure wasn’t much without her “tuner” in the early days..”I’m JUST a GURL”…
you just haven’t got any taste pappy Lily was by far more superior and better looking and had a better voice and was more confident than cherie.
I agree that Christina just doesn’t seem to like country music. She is only impressed by the contestants who can hit the high notes. She seemed to be more impressed by what Lily had on than the actual vocal performances.
I believe the majority who watched the match-off between these two young ladies agrees that it was Cherie who was the better singer. It was a complete shock and disappointment that Christina went with the “hoochie mama!” Well, we all know in advance who isn’t “The Voice” as I can’t see Lillie going much further. As for Cherie, I’m sure there were some very intelligent music people out there watching and one of them will grab on to her quickly!
I agree with Seth that Cherie was the clear winner.
I completely agree! I was so so angry when I heard her say Lilly. She picked her for like that one high note which I thought was way too screechy anyways. Cherie sounded amazing! It seriously is not fair that she got sent home. Lilly was pretty terrible – she was off key at points and her voice just doesn’t have that nice tone to it like Cherie’s does. Okay I’m going to stop now because I keep getting angrier the more I think about it -__-
I agree! I thought that was a shocking decision. Lily was incredibly off-key, but she was also closer to Xtina’s pop stylings, and a complete butt-kisser with her (“Her poster is on my wall, and here I am speaking to her!”)
Cherie was obviously robbed. And yes, I felt the same way when Adam chose that squeaky guy over Rebecca. Both of these women have great voices and style, and I would have loved a chance to see them both perform again. The two people who “won” over them, not so much.
Perhaps “The Voice” would be better if America can choose right from the very start.
Cherie was by far the better singer. Christina’s comments about Lily’s outfit were degrading. Welcome to the sexist world of the music industry. Good luck to Cherie on the next step in your journey. I know that you will get snapped up by talent scouts who know talent when they see it.
I agree with everybody. This show sucks! Cherie has a full, beautifully developed voice and she knows how to sing. Lilly needs a couple more years of voice lessons. That “high note” was obnoxious and painful to listen to. Lilly’s outfit was degrading and frankly stupid. The fact that Xtina commented on her outfit at all was so ridiculous. Is it THE VOICE or THE OUTFIT? What an idiot!!!!!! I agree too that Rebecca should have gone through, and DO NOT get me started on Tyler and the pig nosed country boy. Tyler beat the snot outta that kid and he should’ve gone through too. Join me in watching anything but the rest of this show!!!!!!!!!!
Shocker. Cherie might have the best “voice” I’ve heard on the show. Christina must have felt intimidated by Cherie’s beauty.
I can’t say I agree. The first time I watched, Lily bugged me for all your listed reasons. However I just watched it back and they were both pretty average, singing wise – neither was that fantastic and they both sang some dreadful stuff at times. Lily was definitely trying to run before she can walk, with the diva runs & occasional shouting. She might have hit that high note, but the phrase leading up to with was total rubbish. Cherie however didn’t really ‘pop’. She looked a bit apologetic and desperate the whole time. She was a bit defeatist throughout the whole thing and her tone is unfortunately pretty bland. I wouldn’t have picked her either. I don’t think she has the tone to be a standout ‘soloist’. The judges inevitably form their opinions based on the entire live performance (we only see less than half) and also what they pick up from the rehearsals. If someone is telegraphing negative, defeatist energy like Cherie, that is sure to register with the judges. I thought Cherie was putting out quite jaded vibe during the performance. It was interesting when Christina sang a couple of little things in the rehearsal with the band – her tone was so much richer than either of the two contestants. I actually love hearing little snippets of the coaches singing with their team members – you get really interesting comparisions.
i gotta say i find the voice so corny & cheesy- i keep watching but there are so many cringe worthy moments! the set up causes great singers to be sent home needlessly. the concept of turning chairs, flashing lights & the boxing ring take the cake- big PASS!
I agree with everyone else and think Cherie deserved to win, she did so much better than Lilly did and was very disappointed in Christina’s decision. I was actually disappointed when Blake didn’t choose her when she first sang. But I know she will go far on her own.
I agree with all of you! Cherie is the BETTER singer. Her voice is more polished. Her notes are clear. She may not be able to hit notes as high as Lily does but the way she controls them is just really amazing. Lily on the other hand is so much of a show off. She uses high notes to intimidate the opponent but her notes were not so good. It’s more like of a screaming than singing. Argh! I really hate the decision that Christina made. Obviously there is more advantage to having Cherie than picking Lily in her team.
I just hope that Cherie would never stop finding her way to the music world now that she’s one step closer.
Obviously Christine picked the one who dressed the most provocatively. Hmmmm???
ALL OF YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE YOUR HEADS UP YOUR ASSES AND LOVE CHERIE WHEN IT WAS CLEAR THAT SHE SUCKS AND THAT LILY TOTALLY ROCKED SHE WAS MORE CONFIDENT AND SUPERIOR OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TASTE REALLY IS SORRY TO BE SO BLUNT BUT I’M ONLY SPEAKING THE TRUTH. BYE BYE CHERIE AND GOOD RIDDENS GET THE STEPPIN.
Did anyone ever think that maybe Christina eliminates anyone who could be a future threat to herself?
Cherie didn’t desrve to go home. She is a much more experienced singer. The song might have been more suitable to Lilly but I think that Cherie should have not been sent home
i honestly think cheri shouldve won because her voice is beautiful and so much better than lilys lily has the voice of a man wen she sings and her high notes r like horrible shouts i will most definitly love to c her totally lose in this competition
Cherie was obviously the better singer. Lily’s pitch was not good at all and her tone quality is forced at times. I don’t know what Christina was thinking in this case.
Cherie was to me the way better singer. I really could not believe she didnt get picked and I really can not see Lily making it I believe she will be going home>
