I love Chelsea Lately on E! – but host Chelsea Handler isn’t such a big fan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedienne is considering leaving her show (and the E! network) after her contract runs out in 2012.
“I want to do something that’s going to utilize my brain a little more than this show,” she said. “If ‘Lately’ is the show that I’m going to do, it’s going to change. But it may turn out that I’m done with it altogether. I can’t keep doing the same thing; my brain is bleeding. I want to do something that’s more mindful and isn’t celebrity-centered. I’m not looking to totally bail on E! They’ve done a lot for me, and I like it here… if you take away the Kardashians.”
“I want to do something people aren’t expecting from me,” she said. “I want to educate people and deliver news that isn’t just surrounded by Charlie Sheen. I’d like to be able to do the serious stuff in conjunction with the comedy. I’d like to make an impact and have more responsibility than I do now.” It sounds like she wants to be more on par with Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert? One of the best things about brutally-honest Chelsea is that she doesn’t give a shit if people like her…so I don’t exactly see her getting a warm and fuzzy show on OWN…and with her comedy, I doubt we’d be seeing her do straight news.
She’s also executive producing and starring in a new show that will premiere on NBC in the fall: Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea, based on her memoir. Maybe that will keep her busy enough?
