Amanda Knox Latest News: Appeal Trial Wrapping Up, Victim’s Sister Begs for Justice

Amanda Knox, now 24, is in the final stretch of her appeals trial.  The Seattle native has been in prison in Italy since 2007, when she was accused and convicted of murdering her British roommate.

Before the first hearing after the summer break began, victim Meredith Kercher’s sister, Stephanie, issued a letter asking the appeals court to assess “every single (piece) of evidence.”

“My sister, a daughter brutally and selfishly taken from us nearing 4 years ago — and yet a not a single day goes by that we can grasp any peace or closure,” Stephanie Kercher wrote.

Knox’s claims of innocence seem to be supported by testimony from independent experts that questioned much of the evidence that was collected in the original investigations.  This is particularly important when it comes to the DNA used to tie Knox to the murder.  The experts brought in for her appeal concluded that poor procedural standards practiced in collecting it and the low amounts of DNA used for the testing made it impossible for the sample to offer a genetic profile with any certainty.

“There were aspects of the case that needed to be addressed, they were addressed, and now there’s nothing left of the case,” Knox’s stepfather, Chris Mellas, told the AP.

The prosecution maintain that the evidence should stand, and the Kercher family insist they have faith in the police and the system that originally convicted Knox.

In her written statement, Stephanie Kercher confronted what she called a “media frenzy” around the case, claiming that, “Meredith has been forgotten because she is no longer with us, yet this should be about her and what really happened on that tragic evening.”
