Nooo!!! George Lucas Strikes Again, Adding New Darth Vader Line to Star Wars Blu-Ray Release

George Lucas has proven himself incapable of releasing a new version of the iconic Star Wars film trilogy without messing around with some aspect of his genre defining classic films, so I’m not sure why I’m surprised that he’s done it again.  But somehow, this guy always seems to be able to shock classic trilogy fans like myself with his capacity to self-sabotage his own work.

Seriously.  George. Just leave well enough alone.

What’s he done this time?  In the new Blu-Ray release of the “original” trilogy, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, dear old George has added a new line of dialogue, if you can call it dialogue, for Darth Vader in the climactic scene if Jedi in which (SPOILER ALERT for all four of you who haven’t seen it) Vader throws the Emperor into the core of the Death Star.  Instead of the silent, implacable moment that was so memorable in the original version that I had nightmares about it as a child, Vader now shouts “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!” as he hauls the Emperor to his doom.

I gotta say, I agree with fellow Star Wars fan Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead amongst other things), who Tweeted that he has “loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice” and dubbed the change a “clueless revision.”

Stop messing with your own work, George.  Every good artist knows when to put down the paint brush.
