Sean Avery Gay Comments from Wayne Simmonds Spark Controversy !
Sean Avery has been a huge supporter of the LGBT community so it’s no surprise that he furious over Wayne Simmonds’ alleged homophobic slur which he reportedly yelled at Avery during the Rangers vs. Flyers game last night.
A video replay of the incident apparently shows Simmonds firing the inappropriate comment towards Avery while on the ice near the Flyers’ bench.
Sean spoke out about the incident after the game:
“To be here now having to answer the questions about what he did is disappointing for me. I’m disappointed for him,” Avery said.
John Tortorella, coach for the Rangers told the press “I did not hear it, but I’m sure Sean Avery is not lying about it.”
Simmonds himself hasn’t denied the slur, simply saying “Honestly, we were going back and forth for a while there. I don’t recall everything that I did say to him but he said to me some things I didn’t like and maybe I said some things that he didn’t like. I can’t recall every single word I said.”
Avery was then quick to point out that homophobic slurs are prohibited in the NBA, so much so that “Kobe Bryant got fined ($100,000)” for using the same comment.
Bill Daly – the NHL deputy commissioner – said “we have the ability to discipline for language used on the ice” and that the league “is looking into it.”
Avery finished with a heartfelt comment about the bigger issues these types of comments create:
“It’s an issue,” he said. “It’s an issue that people are dealing with and trying to overcome and ten years ago, maybe it wasn’t so much an issue but it’s certainly an issue politically with people in the game. And just in life in general.”
Couldn’t agree more.
Here’s hoping Simmonds receives the appropriate punishment for his completely unacceptable comment.
Do you think Simmonds should be fined for his outburst?
