Conan O’Brien was in New York in the Beacon Theater this week to celebrate the first full year of his TBS show. He put on a great week of guests, surprises (Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert showed up in the audience), and fan favorites (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog put in an appearance). But no segment was more touching than the wedding of his longtime costume designer Scott Gornick and Scott’s partner, David Gorshein.
When Conan found out that his costume designer was planning to marry his partner while they were in New York for business (gay marriage still isn’t legal in California, where the show is shot) he offered to officiate the ceremony himself.
A comically bizarre number of local TV stations noted that, ”Conan O’Brien may be about to push the envelope on late-night television.” The sentiment was repeated often enough that the late night comedian speculated that all of the local anchors worked from the same script. But the segment didn’t look like a TV stunt to attract attention. It didn’t focus on its historical distinction (this is the first same-sex marriage to be performed on live late-night television). It focused on the joy shared by the couple and their friends, and Scott’s long time boss, on this special day.
