Last week, X Factor USA stirred up a lot of drama for fans when Astro pulled a temper tantrum and disrespected the judges after being in the bottom two but this week it’s the judges being disrespectful to one another: particularly Simon Cowell and LA Reid.
The two judges have always butted heads but tonight their feud was taken to a whole other level after LA Reid criticized Simon for choosing the song “Skyscraper” for Drew.
LA’s comments stated that the song was for someone much older than Drew and that she shouldn’t be singing songs made for artists 40 years older than her. The problem with his comments is that Demi Lovato – who is 19 years old – is the artist that made that song popular this year.
Simon – along with Paula – were quick to make that point but Simon made the tension even worse when he said that he was ‘completely fed up’ with LA’s unfounded criticism.
LA Reid responded by telling Simon that he thinks that Simon can “dish it but not take it” but Simon completely disregarded his comments and focused on the fact that LA was trying to take this opportunity away from Drew.
There’s no doubt that there’s brewing tension between the judges but whose side are you on here.

You already know you have a unique voice, follow your choices. I am a 51 year old Canadian, father of 3 great children. You could easily, much like Adele, do music for all ages. I for one have bought all of Adele’s CDs. Yes, hose of us between 40-60 have been left behind by mainstream music are out there buying CDs. Unfortunately producers like LA obsorbed by the flash and dash of mainstream music, have forgotten about us. A select number of single artists and bands were able to evolve and last decades by maturing their music to there followers. Drew stay the course, your fans will stay with you for decades.
Simon is right about Drew. LA is making up criticism because he doesn’t get non rap music. You see him bopping to rap, but he doesn’t get mainstream pop. Drew is awesome and by far the best artist.
No, the critique by LA was not right tonight, but Drew is definitely not the best artist on the show. She has gradually become my least favorite contestant to watch. I am never excited for her performance. She is talented, but she has not shown range. DON’T criticize Astro, because rap is rap. But I’m talking about the singers, and she does not hold up to Melanie, Rachel, Marcus, and Josh. I’m just speaking the truth.
I have an issue with the criticism of Drew by fans of Astro, We seem to have two solitude’s here. However, ANYONE defending L.A Reid in this strategy to break Drew down which is well known “behind the scenes” needs to learn the meaning of the word “integrity” and take a course in it.
Drew has a enormous fan base for a reason. There is a HUGE market segment that LOVES what she does and is excitied each time she appears on stage and opens her mouth. If you dont like rap “shut up and have respect” if you dont like Drew dont ruin the experience for the huge market segment that does.

Simon was very nasty, he referred to LA’s comments as “stupid” and accused him of wanting to hurt a young girl’s feelings. If Simon feels that the contestants can’t take criticism then he should raise the age limit to include only adullts.

LA is threatened by Drew and has gone week to week and no matter how well Drew does, he will find something to criticize and make it all about him and his guys. Simon stood by his girl tonight, and so will girls all over the world. LA made a huge mistake by labeling “Skyscraper” as a song for “40 year olds”.
I was happy that Simon was sticking up for Drew.
More than a competition, these judges should be giving constructive criticism.
LA’s info was incorrect, there was no grace in his criticism, and to top it off, it wasn’t accurate.

Totally agree with g9; I’m also frustrated by LA Reids weekly verbal beatings of Drew. She has such a unique voice…. one that I definitely have not heard out in todays music world. I also sensed that he was trying to stir up the voters into not voting for her. Unfortunately for LA, it’s what made me pick up the phone to vote for Drew.

I completely agree, the judges are out of control. One can disagree with someone without completely bashing them. It is disrespectful to speak to people the way that these judges have spoken to their colleagues. Simon may have been accurate in his opinion of LA’s criticism, however, he was not only disrespectful but extremely unprofessional. That verbal lashing should not have come on air, he should have discussed the matter with LA off air.

I agree. The judges have ulterior motives trying to prove who is the better mentor. It’s a shame. People who really appreciate good music and good performers will eventually get sick of it to the point they just stop tuning in.
No doubt Simon can’t take criticism very well, but in this case LA could not have been more in the wrong. He is trying to attack her performance saying it was for an artist 40 years older when it is actually a 19 year old singing the song. There could not really be a more age appropriate song or a more current song that she could have possibly done tonight. So LA is either totally incompetent and in his position should be a little more aware of what the very popular songs on the charts are and who sings them, or he is going out of his way to try to constantly chop down the artist that he feels the most threatened by. It seems like it is a combination of the two to me.

LA Ried has never been mean to Drew and if u actually payed attention rather than follow what daddy simon says u will notice that LA and Drew are actually quite close backstage and they tend to hangout and joke with each other a lot. LA has said many times before that Drew has huge potential and her voice is one of the best in the competition but the problem with her is that she is too stubborn to expand on her talent and skills, hence why shes becomin predictable and boring.

Actually, Mariah’s past few albums have sucked compared to her earlier albums. I would attribute that fact more to LA than Mariah’s overall success
While some of what you say has merit Love ur enemies the point is the LA is critiquing Drew for things that his team is guilty of. The only member of his team that has stepped out of the same lane is Marcus Canty (to questionable success). Astro is doing rap and is the same every time as is Chris Rene. So his critiques of Drew ring hollow! Let’s not forget the embarrassment of not realizing Skyscraper is a song by a young girl (19 yr old Demi Lovato). It is a song that is currently getting good airplay on the radio so yes LA is too busy and a tad out of touch. He has young children so this is somewhat surprising. I think all of the judges need to relax and focus on giving the singers more meaningful critiques. Their picking and slamming is so childish and I find it embarrassing to witness so I do turn the channel now during their worthless critiques.
LA Reid has no clue. Simon was completely right. Yes, Drew’s performances are similar week to week, but her voice is and talent are unmistakeable. I find it funny that Astro, Chris and Markus do the same thing each week. They do nothing to test their ranges or expand outside their own narrowly defined musical niches. For all I know Astro could be doing the same song each week. Yet, LA criticizes Drew for doing so. Drew is unique and extremely talented. Yes, her style is fairly fixed, but like his 3 boys, she sticks who she is. LA has a point, but his attacks are disingenuous and factually inaccurate. But, they be just what Drew needed to mobilize an army of angst-ridden teens in her favor.
LA never criticized Drew for sticking to her chosen genre of music which is “contemporary” music. LA criticized the “tempo” that she has been performing her music in and the arrangement she chose for them. choosing to slow down every single song she is given week in week out is making it seem like all her performances are identical with no diversity.
this is where smart mentoring comes, because diversity is not only shows though the genre of the song, but it can also be accomplished through choosing clever and fresh arrangements of the song itself.
Astor and Chris both are following the hiphop and RnB genre but if u actually pay attention u will see that both of them have performed songs with different arrangements with different overall tempos. you can never say that astro’s performances week in week out have the same because despite the fact that hes rapping (and rapping is a style of music just like singing) the style of his arrangements has been vastly different from one performance to another.
Beyonce is an RnB singer but do u see every single song she sings to have the same identical arrangement? nope. some of her songs are slow like if i were a boy, some are midtempo with a light rhythmic popish arrangement like Irreplaceable, and some are uptempo with big dance flavors like single ladies and sweet dream. yet despite that all of the above are still considered of the HipHop and RnB style of music.
this is called being able to diverse urself as an artist and an entertainer while still remaining within the boarders of ur chosen genre
when you preform rap to different songs, doesn’t make the rap different, just the background, rap is rap, talking with no attempt to harmonize with the sound track

I really dislike people like Wayne…who don’t understand a good “rap” artist utilizes the same parameters singers use when they compose their lyrics. To think these guys just go and rant a bunch of words thrown together regardless of the beat is just completely ignorant. Now, some rappers do do that, but the best don’t…I challenge you to write 16 bars to a beat and actually stay on beat with the track…you’ll realize it’s not as easy as you make it seem.

I am definately with Simon on this. I am not a huge fan of Simon but I am happy he stood up for Drew. I think L.A. needs to do a little more homework on songs prior to the show. For a man in the music business he is making a fool of himself with some of his comments. Back a couple weeks he also stood firmly by the fact that “Ain’t no other man” by Christina was a song that he has never heard of.
Drew needs to pick up the tempo next week a bit. I think a good song for Drew this week would have been Thank You by Dido.

I believe LA tried to find something wrong with Drew’s performance/song choice because of his dislike for SImon. What is really shocking to me is that LA as a major record label producer and CEO of Epic records, let his anger make him sound like a complete jackass. For someone with that resume to not know that song had been remade and is a current pop hit with alot of airplay shows that he is out of touch. If I was running X-Factor, I would have to really reconsider keeping him as a judge/mentor, not to mention trusting any label he is in charge of, of doing right by and for new artists. I’m completely floored by his blunder, I hope for his sake that this isn’t a career ending one.
dont make me laugh..before criticizing LA go do a little look up on him and see what huge artists this man has managed to turn into international superstars over the years while simon’s little british puppets had fallen one after the other into obscurity. have u ever wondered why the winner’s label was changed from simon’s SyCo to LA Ried’s Epic? because simon’s management has been considered the biggest joke in the history of music in Britain. all his male winners that he managed have flopped and were dropped within a year of their win from his label after he gave them albums filled with dull boring covers that turned them into laughing stock of british public and media. the only male winner he still has on his label has not done any better than the previous ones but thankfully simon had the decency to allow him to be co-signed with Columbia records who are pretty much handling everything.
the only successful winners he has on his label are the 2 female winner Leona lewis (who has disappeared after he second album flopped internationally due to –guess what– the fact that almost all the songs on the album were dull and slow ballads that achieve nothing but lull one to sleep within one play of the tracks) and Alexandra Burke, who has so much potential but has been handled stupidly by simon (thankfully she seems to have switched labels after less than 2 years to the great relief of her fans).
even leona’s and alexandra’s fans will tell u that its actually best to not win the show because the worst thing one would wish for is to be managed by simon and his incompetent staff at SyCo. ask any british label and they will tell u what a big joke SyCo is and what a horrible music producer simon is.

I was commenting solo on his comments to this particular incident, which on it’s own merit make him look incompetent. You guys are taking this matter over the edge about comparing Simon to LA Reid, this lack of judgement is getting people sick , look in front of you, watch the show and tell me what’s kind of game is being played by the judges, I am a fan of hip hop music of course but not fan of bad behavior that Astro played out in the last previous show. LA is so very predictable. If it is not “his boy” it is the wrong song choice. LA has a complete bias for the type of music that he likes and passes off any other styles as trash music. He does not like the TYPE of music that Drew sings therefore Drew is no good in his mind. He should bear in mind that there are people out there who feel the same way about his choice of music style. He is judging people by the STYLE that LA Reid likes instead of judging their performance or style. He needs to quit making this a competition of judges and style and teach his boy Astro some manners.
L. A. Reid was trying to encourage Drew (and Simon) to make better choices. If Drew’s slow predicable tempo of music doesn’t change, she will never be an international superstar. The fact is that Drew sang the song like it was for someone 40 years older. She needs to cater to her own age group. L. A. Reid wants Drew’s recording career to be successful and long lived. So, whose really looking out for Drew? Simon whose only interest is X Factor or L. A. Reid whose only interest is producing recording superstars.

I’m with Simon on this one.LA was not critiquing Drew, he was insulting Simon and his facts were wrong. Generally, I respect LA’s comments but not this time.There is no difference to me between Drew and Astro, they both never change it up at all. Drew sings the way she sings and Astro raps, that’s it. Chris Rene…is original, talented, respectful, grateful AND he changes it up.
Simon’s plan from day one was to control his fellow judges. He had Paula simply by inviting her to participate, so he only had two to worry about. He’s been beating down Nicole as a mentor, which makes many watchers want to puke because we want the performance critiqued, not the mentor. Nicole fights back, but even she loved Simon’s praise last night. Sadly, his manipulation is making some progress with her.
I hoped early on that LA would not rise to Simon’s putrid bait, but he couldn’t help himself. He has a lot more reason for a big ego than Simon A-hole. LA went too far last night, and made a factual mistake which many people are pounding him for now, but Simon’s response was more telling. It was vicious and ugly. It was the real Simon and won’t be forgotten by LA. Why would he want to subject himself to that? Simon owns the show but he does not own the judges, except for Paula. The mentor vs. mentor smackdown is turning off a lot of viewers, and the show doesn’t have enough to spare.

I’ve read all your comments, I’ve seen the show. LA & Simon are both jerks and its true Drew is boring. Astro is a brat but its called ratings people, the show needs a fan base, how better to build both.
Personally, I think that LA Reid is afraid of Drew because he knows that she can actually win this competition and of course, he wants his mentee Astro (Brian Bradley) to win! He argues each week that Drew does the same thing every week/same genre but Astro does too. He raps ever week. And this is no dig on Astro. I think despite his poor sportsmanship last week, he is talented and can easily win this competition. It’s a little weird to see LA Reid publicly bully Drew every week live on television. It’s rather distasteful — and for Simon (whom I never like on AI) is completely likable on this show! In my opinion, Simon’s criticisms have always been truthful (through American Idol and X Factor). Sometimes he makes fun of the contestants, he’s mean to them or he’s honest but they have all generally been truthful. LA criticizes because he wants it to be a competition amongst the judges and not of the contestants. From the very beginning, with the promos..his main agenda was going against simon. I dont even know if he even cares about the contestants at all.
with melanie’s performance a few weeks back, he had to publicly apologize for wrongly criticizing her…but he continues to do that..trying to find things wrong with her. This week he even started by saying, “how could I criticize that.” why do you always have to look to be critical off the bat when you’re not mentoring them? I would be interested to see what his true feelings of marcus canty or chris rene are…they are not that good…and if simon were mentoring them, it would be a different story.
I think Simon was WAY out of line. L.A. was giving his opinion as a judge. If Cowell has an issue with L.A. he should take it private. NOT telling him he’s “sick of him” in so many words. I personally think Drew has a beautiful voice but am REALLY TIRED of the slow song choices….If she makes an album with the same slow songs throughout the c.d. I would never buy it!

In case you all did not know. This show is NOT American Idol. The JUDGES on the X-factor are also COMPETING. This adds a new flavor and dimension to the show in my opinion.
LA Reid has become an absolute dork. The issues with this unlikable character are far deeper than the gaffe that he made about Demi Lovato’s 40 year old song. LA told a couple other acts that “I was prepared to not like it but you shut me down”. What an approach. This guy has taken this approach many times telling people that it was good but not your best but it was good but not your best but it was good but your mentor picked the wrong song but it was good and you know I like you but I take issue with your mentor. This is not about the other mentors. This is about trying to give constructive criticism to contestants. Half the time the winner is good but also very likeable. LA is not likeable. He things he is all that and more and is starting to look more like a guy who got very lucky and who thinks he is god instead of being humble for the success he has had. I think he should be fired from the show for being a bad judge and for being a loser in general.
Simon was right on. LA is threatened. He is highly competitive and will bash any contestant that he sees a threat to his boys. I 100% agree with Robb. It seems to me that LA has gotten extremely lucky in the music business, because going on his actions on X alone, he seems like a pure novice concerning anything that isn’t 80-90s R&B and Hip Hop.

Well, we must all agree with the fact that whatever the situation is, Simon is mostly right. He may be proud or whatever, but the fact doesn’t change that he has more quality judgement than others.
