Condom Law Controversy! Porn Actors Must Wear Condoms, Says New Law

On Tuesday, Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a proposed law that will force porn actors to wear condoms during film shoots within city limits. Today, many in the porn industry responded by threatening to move shoots outside of the city. It turns out that some porn actors really don’t want to wear condoms.

Supporters of the new law say that condoms will help protect porn performers against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Presumably, seeing condoms in porn films would also lead to more usage of condoms among the porn-watching audience (at least, those who watch porn and also have sex with other human beings).

Oppontents of the law argue that seeing condoms in porn movies is unappealing. In other words, they don’t really have much of an argument.

The final vote on the matter was 9-1. It’s unclear which member of the city council voted against the measure or why.

Los Angeles is the first city in the country to pass such a measure. The move is particularly significant because over 80 percent the U.S.-based porn industry is operates out of Los Angeles.

It’s unclear how the new law will be enforced. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) currently requires porn actors to wear condoms and other barriers when in contact with bodily fluids, but this requirement is openly violated.
