We’ve reached the point where news of the demise of any celebrity must be confirmed on a legitimate news source. Twitter hoaxes about the deaths of celebs are all the rage these days and today we’ve got another star who has been reported dead on the social media site: Cher.
Cher is not dead. I repeat: Cher is not dead.
The singer is still very much alive and the rumors of her death are all a hoax perpetrated by some pranksters on Twitter. What started as a small prank soon ballooned and “RIP Cher” was trending for a while last night. What may have helped the prank gain steam was that the original tweet was a faked retweet from CNN’s official twitter account that read:
RTÂ @CNN: American recording artist Cher dies at 65 years old. Found dead in Malibu home.
Astute Twitter users will know that it is very easy to fake tweets from official accounts. Heck, sometimes it seems like half of Twitter is made up of fake celebrity accounts.
Some celebrities even fell for the prank. Kim Kardashian sent a tweet to her followers asking if the news was real and exclaiming “Is this real? OMG.” Then again, Kim has never really proven herself to be the sharpest tool in the shed.
Previously, celebrities including Hugh Hefner and Charlie Sheen have been reported on Twitter to have died.
