Jennifer Hudson Tribute to Whitney Houston at the Grammys 2012 (WATCH!)

The Grammy producers faced an impossible task: pay tribute to Whitney Houston, who died suddenly just a day before the telecast. With no time to put together a big segment, the producers instead relied on Jennifer Hudson to sing an understated, respectful version of “I Will Always Love You” near the end of the show. Take a look at her abbreviated performance:

“We will always love you, Whitney,” a tearful Jennifer said at the end.

Jennifer’s graceful rendition of the classic Dolly Parton song (that became iconic in Whitney’s film The Bodyguard) was absolutely perfect. She performed it in the style of Whitney, yet did not try to match or outdo her in power. She skipped the big high note that Whitney was known for.

Jennifer, 30, has actually paid tribute to Whitney Houston before, at the 2010 BET Honors, which celebrated Whitney’s 25 years as a pop icon. EW also notes that at Whitney’s last Grammy appearance in 2009, Whitney presented Jennifer with the award for Best R&B Album.

In an odd Grammy awards featuring a juxtaposition of old people, Taylor Swift’s baffling Dust-Bowl-couture and the weirdest Nicki Minaj performance anyone’s ever seen, Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston was the one perfect note.
