
The 2012 Academy Awards started with a light-hearted video featuring George Clooney kissing host Billy Crystal. Crystal then took us back in time by kicking off with a musical number.
Martin Scorses’s Hugo nabbed the first two awards, one for Cinematography and the other for Art Direction. Hugo later won for Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.
The two Golden Globe winners for supporting acting roles also took home Oscars – Christopher Plummer for his role as a gay father with terminal cancer in The Beginners and Octavia Spencer for her role as a maid in The Help. These awards were two of the most if not only expected wins.
Ludavic Bource won for Original Music Score for The Artist. Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords won Original Music Song for “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets.
Best Animated Feature went to Rango, Documentary Feature went to Undefeated (the real-life Friday Night Lights), and Best Foreign Feature went to A Separation.
Costume Design went to The Artist and Makeup went to Iron Lady’s Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland.
Now for the major awards: Michel Hazanivicius won for Best Director for The Artist. Jean Dejurdin won for Best Actor for his role in The Artist. Meryl Streep won the Best Actress award for Margaret Thatcher portrayl in the Iron Lady. Finally, Best Picture goes to The Artist!
