American Idol Kicks Off Performances With Fan Favorites Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez
Will.i.am is the vocal coach this week. And the show theme is baby photos.
Phillip Phillips is first and he tells Jimmy Iovine and Will.i.am that he has kidney stones. Will.i.am is impressed that Phillip sounds so good despite his abdominal pain. After his performance, the judges praise him for sounding so amazing after a surgery.
Jessica Sanchez is next. Her parents say that her “lungs got started” as a baby when she’d scream her head off until she literally fainted. Jessica sings “Turn the Beat Around” by Gloria Estefan wearing silver sequined pants. She has a lot more swagger this week. I think her confidence is really settling in. Her performance is sold. However, Steven Tyler says she shouldn’t stray away from ballads. JLo and Randy agree, and remark that she has too much vibrato for this kind of song.
Heejun Han goes for Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting.” Jimmy fixes his accent. He asks Will.i.am for Fergie’s number. His performance is a bit shaky but very emotional. Randy says, “Dude for me, I didn’t really enjoy this at all. It was pitchy all over the place… It felt like you were out of breath the whole time.” I think Randy is spot on.
