Erika Van Pelt sings “New York State of Mind.” Diddy says she must sing it like a New Yorker, as if she’s singing in Yankee Stadium. Do away with her Rhode Island. Tommy Hilfiger recommends she cut her hair because she idolizes Pink, and because it highlights her jawbone. Randy compliments her new look and says she’s one of the best singers in the competition. JLo says the vocal is beautiful but she should “unplant her feet.”
Joshua Ledet is up next. Mr. Hilfiger suggests he don a classy tuxedo so he could look polished. He sings “She’s Got A Way,” but says he feels uncomfortable during the mentoring session because he doesn’t connect with the song. However, his actual performance was pretty incredible. JLo says he sang well but he didn’t really feel it. Steven Tyler says he was impressed, and Randy is 50/50.
Skylar Laine walks into her mentoring session completely speechless and starstruck due to Diddy. She chooses to sing “Shameless.” Diddy interrupts her first attempt and says it sounds forced. She tries again and he jumps out of his chair and hugs her, pleased. Tommy Hilfiger wants to evolve Skylar’s look without abandoning her cowboy boots. Randy says the beginning of her performance was pitchy and it was just “pretty good.” JLo says she loves her “attack.”
No one’s overwhelmed the judges so far, but there’s still six singers left!
