The Hunger Games Beats The Dark Knight in Midnight Box Office Profits!
The Hunger Games has exceeded expectations, making $19.75 MILLION in Thursday night midnight screenings alone! Deadline Hollywood reports that the Jennifer Lawrence starrer, based on the book series by Suzanne Collins, is now the 7th highest midnight gross of all time. To put that in perspective, The Dark Knight made only $18.5M in midnight showings on a summer opening in 2008. The Hunger Games is also the highest IMAX non-summer non-holiday 2D opening of all time, earning $1.3M from 269 IMAX locations.
THG even beat some Twilight records. Many people compare the movie to Twilight – and the comparison makes sense given that both movies are based on young adult novels, and both movies feature teenage female protagonists. But Hunger Games reviews are mostly positive, earning the film an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes – whereas the Twilight movies are not so respected.
Some Hunger Games statistics we found really interesting/shocking:
Fandango is currently selling 12 tickets per second
97% of online ticket sales today are for The Hunger Games
More than 3,500 showtimes sold out on Fandango in advance of the release
89% of HG ticket buyers said they plan to see the movie on opening weekend
62% of HG ticket buyers planned on seeing the film more than once on the big screen
54% were going with a group of 3 or more friends
The 62% going to see it again is what’s really crazy to me. It’s like back when Titanic was in theaters! What is it about a movie that makes people want to go see it again? I guess everyone is really in love with Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Are you Team Peeta or Team Gale?
I may wait to see the movie until after the craziness dies down… I’ve already read the book so I know what happens. Is it important to you to see THG on opening weekend?
