American Idol: Phillip Phillips Says Elise Testone Is Better Singer
The contestants are coupling up again to sing duets (and effectively take up the two-hour time slot).
Elise Testone and Phillip Phillips are up and they’re singing Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Phillip jokes that Elise didn’t give him a choice to sing that. Except that he’s serious. Elise explains that the song is about being screwed over and she knows how that feels. The video shows some fake slapping and something being thrown at Phillip’s head.
I don’t think their chemistry is as strong as some other duos, although Ryan Seacrest sure does a good job at making them uncomfortable by asking about how it feels to stare into each other’s eyes. The judges like their duet. JLo says there was a bit of “imbalance” there – Elise was great but Phillip was completely out of his comfort zone. Phillip says that Elise is just a better singer than he is. The audience clearly disagrees because they’re madly booing.
Jessica Sanchez chooses a less-than-popular song, Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering.” Even Jimmy Iovine is unfamiliar with it. Akon says that from day one he knew she would become a legend. Randy says Jessica set the standard really high and “slayed the biggest fish.”
