Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” Reveals She Had Kidney Transplant
Sarah Hyland of Modern Family underwent a kidney transplant last month. The 21 year-old actress (who plays Haley on the hit ABC sitcom) told Seventeen Magazine that her dad was the selfless donor.
“You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what,” she told the mag. “My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney! But it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.” She also said she is “one of the luckiest people in the world” to have her supportive boyfriend, Matt Prokop.
Sarah also sat down with Good Morning America to explain her condition. She was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia when she was just 9 years-old – and Sarah says it caused her “be in a lot of pain a lot of the time.” She continued: “If I didn’t get, like, 12 hours of sleep, it felt like none at all.”
Of course, being an actress complicated things. “You know, if you’re sick, you still go to work,” she said.
Sarah has been working as a youth ambassador to The Lopez Foundation (created by actor George Lopez) in an effort to help raise awareness about kidney disease. “I think it’s really great because it gives kids opportunities they wouldn’t normally have and I’ve had experiences like that in my life, so it’s really close to my heart,” she said.
We’re glad you’re feeling better! For more of Sarah, you can follow her on Twitter.
