Phillip Phillips Takes the ‘American Idol’ Crown! (VIDEO)

As reported last night, Phillip Phillips is this season’s American Idol! The Georgian native took home the crown, winning out against 16-year-old Cali native, Jessica Sanchez.

A whooping 132 million people voted last night, smashing the previous voting records.

It was a truly emotional moment for 21-year-old Phillip, who couldn’t help but get teary-eyed during the performance of his upcoming single, Home.

What was going through the winner’s mind? “I wasn’t thinking about anything, not even the song,” he said backstage. “I wasn’t really wanting to sing or anything. I just started thinking about the whole journey and how far all of us have come, and how we’ve made it. It’s so overwhelming.”

After a two-hour finale that featured Rihanna, Neil Diamond, Chaka Khan, and Reba McEntire as guest performers, Ryan Seacrest handed the Idol title over to Phillips. The singer and guitar player brought an indie vibe to the show, and fans everywhere responded to his lowkey sound. Phillips is the fifth male competitor in a row to take home the crown.

“I’m not a great singer. I just love having fun up on stage and playing good music and getting the crowd into it,” added Phillips. “Music’s fun, dude.”

Congrats to the new American Idol!
