Is Priscilla Chan’s Engagement Ring Too Small?
“Your hubby Zucks,” reads a headline in the New York Post. Amid the frenzy of Facebook’s IPO, Mark Zuckerberg also got married to his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan in a modest backyard ceremony that featured “$7.50 Mexican food.” But that’s not why internet commenters are drinkin the haterade today: they’re super offended because Priscila’s custom $25,000 ruby engagement ring is, well, tiny.
“Zucker-bride Priscilla Chan dined out in Palo Alto, Calif., this week revealing the itty-bitty rock her man — who is worth about $17 billion on paper — put on her finger as they exchanged vows Saturday.” The Daily Mail also chimed in: “What happened to three months’ salary, Mark?” Luckily, The Atlantic offers a voice of reason.
Okay, everyone, let’s chill for a second. Sure, $25,000 is not a huge chunk of change for Zuckerberg – but don’t assume that Priscilla is super unhappy about her ring. Not everyone wants a giant Jessica Biel diamond. And for the people wondering why it isn’t a diamond: If the ring was customized for Priscilla, don’t you think Zuckerberg took the time to figure out what his fiancee wanted? Maybe she loves rubies! It’s not my style, but you rock whatever ring you want, girl!
I do admit that I was surprised to see that $25,000 only gets you that much ruby…
But $25,000 is a lot of money, and I really doubt that Priscilla is crying off in a corner somewhere because her wedding wasn’t up to Kardashian extravagance. Maybe she was more concerned with actually marrying the right person!
