Katy Perry Wears Inappropriate Crotch-Bedazzled Bodysuit, Dresses Little Girl in Cupcake Boobs at MuchMusic Awards
Oh, Katy Perry. Her cutesy-yet-weirdly-sexual costume parade continues: last night at Canada’s MuchMusic Awards, the pop singer wore a nude bodysuit bedazzled with crystals in very special spots. The preponderance of sparkles around her crotch gave the effect of…well, I think you get the picture.
A blogger at Celebitchy is offended by the outfit, claiming that the MuchMusic Awards is “much more kid-friendly than, say, the MTV Music Awards. The MTV Music Awards are for teenagers – MuchMusic is for tweens and younger.”
What do you think of the outfit? I don’t think it’s that offensive, but it’s definitely ugly, Katy. Come on now. The black and gold goddessy gown she wore on the red carpet was a million times hotter.
What DOES offend me is that Katy came out onto the red carpet surrounded by little girls (we’re talking 6-10 years old) dressed up in various outfits from her videos – and one of them sported blue hair and cupcakes over her breasts like Katy did “California Gurls.” Yes, the little red cherries stand for nipples. “It’s not okay,” writes Dodai Stewart at Jezebel. “It’s one thing for a grown woman to cover sexualized areas with edible treats, announcing (however playfully) that her body is quite literally for consumption. But to transfer that message onto the body of a child is revolting.”

We agree. As fun as Katy’s songs are, they celebrate adult themes (Google the lyrics to “Last Friday Night” and tell us if you want your 6 year-old singing it). She combines overt sexiness with bright, sparkly, cutesy things that young girls are attracted to – and these girls aren’t mature enough to understand what they’re projecting when they emulate her.
We’re not calling out the censors…but a little less sexual objectification of little girls would be great.
