Lauryn Hill Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion, Faces Jail Time

I just wished that when I read something about Lauryn Hill, it would be about her releasing a new album or working on a new tune, but no–She’s facing jail time, possibly.

The singer was charged with tax evasion earlier this month, and she has now pleaded guilty. Hill has failed to file an income tax return from 2005-2007, and she’s now experiencing the repercussions from the tax man.

Hill could face a maximum one-year sentence on the three counts of tax evasion. She admitted she had not paid taxes on $818,000 earned in 2005, $222,000 in 2006, and $761,000 in 2007.

The once acclaimed singer-songwriter had disappeared from the public sphere to raise her six children–five of whom were fathered by Rohan Marley. Albeit, she has made a few appearances since then, but nothing notable.

In her Tumblr page she blasted today’s pop culture calling it a ”climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism.” I have said this before and I’ll say it again: I’m a HUGE Lauryn Hill, but c’mon! Hasn’t the music industry always been like this?

I think by fading into the background, hermit style, she isn’t helping to invigorate a music industry that’s fueled by brightly clad ‘artists,’ nor has it helped that the only thing people hear about is her baby daddy’s new wife.

I hope Lauryn Hill doesn’t go to jail. This is probably unlikely. All I want is a half decent album from her. Okay, maybe I can’t hope for the glory that was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, but some semblance of the artist that had been. And. End. Rant.
