Luke Bryan Reads Lyrics Off His Hand to Sing National Anthem at MLB All-Star Game (WATCH!)
And the rockets red…wait, what are the lyrics? According to USA Today, country star Luke Bryan sang the Star Spangled Banners at the MLB All Star game last night – but had to look down at his hand to remember the lyrics. Check out his performance:

After fans criticized the country star on Twitter, Luke addressed his unusual performance: “I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn’t mess up,” he explained. “I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart. If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest.”
Okay, now I feel a little bad. I once performed a concerto with my high school orchestra and choose to do it with the music in front of me, not because it wasn’t memorized, but because it made me feel more comfortable and confident knowing that the music was there in case I had a brain fart. Still, Luke isn’t performing in high school – he’s a professional musician singing in front of thousands of fans at a baseball stadium (and millions of fans watching on TV)!
Fans also noted that it looked like Luke checked his watch during the song – but Luke explained that he wasn’t bored. “I did check my watch because I knew the stealth bomber would fly over 2 minutes in and I knew a started a little late.” Luke also wrote, “Being a part of the all star game was amazing and I look forward to the next time I can perform the anthem. Thanks y’all. Love ya.”
So, using a “cheat sheet” for the national anthem’s lyrics might not be the most professional move, but I give Luke credit for being classy on Twitter.
Oh, right – what did you think of his actual singing?
