Nicole Kidman’s Tough Love — How She Keeps Keith Urban Balanced
Nicole Kidman‘s other half Keith Urban talks briefly about their relationship in the August issue of GQ Australia.
The country singer says he is truly grateful for his wife’s tough love approach. Recently, Nicole has been in the headlines following the dissolution of her ex-husband Tom Cruise‘s marriage to Katie Holmes.
“Negativity and doubt are always creeping into my life and having to be kept at bay,” said Urban to GQ Australia. “Thankfully, Nic is great at calling me on it, and our marriage is at the stage where she doesn’t have to say anything. I hear myself prattling on with negative crap and her loaded silence shuts me up.”
Urban, 44, and Kidman, 45, have now been married for six years, and Urban acknowledges the pressures of the limelight. ”We try to keep a sense of privacy around us, while acknowledging that Nic and I both inhabit very public professions.”
It seems that Kidman’s tough love approach has come in handy over the years. Urban entered rehab four months after marrying the actress in 2006. It was his third stint in eight years. The country singer suffers from substance abuse, with an addiction to cocaine as his chief affliction.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, he describes how Nicole’s love saved him. Kidman gathered a few close friends and staged an intervention. ”To see love in action to that degree… I’d never experienced anything like that,” Urban told Winfrey. “It was really a profound moment in so many ways. The way in which Nic handled that moment was just perfect… Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together.”
The two now have two daughters together: Sunday Rose, 4, and Faith Margaret, 18 months. ”Being a husband and a father is a horrendous responsibility,” Urban tells GQ Australia, “but it’s a beautiful opportunity as well.”
