Heidi Klum Says Her Kids Must “Look Cool”
Mommy bloggers, get ready to freak out. According to People Magazine, supermodel and Project Runway host Heidi Klum says that she gives her kids pretty strict orders about being fashionable. “We have a rule in the house,” she said. “Rule No. 1 is always to look cool, and rule No. 2 is don’t forget about rule No. 1. We have other rules…but the No. 1 rule is to always look cool.”
Not “brush your teeth,” not “finish your homework,” not “be nice to your brother.” And sure, those may be in her “other rules” somewhere – but she made a point to say that Rules 1 AND 2 are about physical appearance.
Heidi has four kids: Leni, 8, Henry, 6½, Johan, 5½, and Lou, 2½, and she says that Leni and Henry take her fashion rules “very seriously.” She elaborated: “Henry changes clothes 10 times a day and he wants to be very cool. I mean, he would wear a T-shirt and then he will wear a tie just around his neck, knotted, and then a belt over the shirt. He [has] very unusual ways of dressing where I’m like, ‘Really? You want to put the belt over your T-shirt and the tie around your neck?’ And he’s like, ‘Yes, mom. I’m cool.’”
Now, the article doesn’t really tell us if Heidi was half (or completely) joking about the “rules,” and I’m also not sure what question prompted this exchange. Of course, Heidi has a passion for and has made boatloads of money as a result of fashion – but are these really the values we should be instilling in our kids? That physical appearance is the most important thing about them? Or even worse, is she using her kids as accessories or making them an extension of her “brand”?
Personal expression is great – and Henry should feel free to wear ties in unusual ways. But is Heidi going a little too far with her emphasis on fashion and being “cool”?
