‘The Who’ Honors 1979 Cancelled Show Tickets

If you bought a ticket to The Who’s cancelled 1979 show in Rhode Island, you may be in luck. If you held on to your ticket, you can see The Who next year for free.

The Who hasn’t been back to Rhode Island since 1979, when then-mayor Buddy Cianci cancelled their show over safety concerns. After 11 people were trampled to death at a Who show earlier that year, Cianci wasn’t willing to take any chances.

Unfortunately, this meant that anyone who had purchased a ticket to the show were out of luck. Until now.

The Who is wrapping up its 2012 tour at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence – the same venue they were slated to play at 33 years ago. The band’s manager, Lawrence Lepore, has gone on record stating that if anyone still has their ticket from the 1979 show, it will be honored at this one.

“Somewhere, someplace, someone’s got it stashed,” said Lepore. “The question is, are they willing to give that up? If they are, we’re willing to take it.”

The 1979 tickets can be exchanged by calling Lepore’s office, and they’ll be donated as memorabilia to raise money for the Special Olympics of Rhode Island.
