Elderly Woman Attempts to Restore Painting, Fails Hilariously (PHOTO)

An elderly woman in Spain thought it was a shame that a fresco in her local church had deteriorated from exposure to moisture. While the average person in this situation would simply imagine the painting as it once was, or perhaps try to raise money to have it professionally restored, this woman was clearly not the average person.

“I got this,” said the woman (except in Spanish), and promptly got to work on some DIY restoration. She was so confident in her abilities that she neither told anyone nor asked permission to paint over the fresco.

And that is how Ecce Homo, a historic painting of Jesus by Elias Garcia Martinez, came to look like a portrait of a monkey getting a haircut.

Eventually, the unnamed elder realized that she couldn’t actually paint at all, and contacted Juan Maria Ojeda, a city councilor.

“I think she had good intentions,” said Ojeda. “Next week she will meet with a repairer and explain what kind of materials she used. If we can’t fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting.”

The best part of the story? The granddaughter of the painting’s (original) artist had just donated money to a local artwork preservation center. They were planning on using it to have the painting professionally restored.
