Miss China Wins Miss World 2012, People Aren’t Happy About It

Miss World 2012 has crowned Miss China, Wen Xia Yu, as the pageant winner. Miss China hails from, well, China, and people are pointing to host country favoritism. The Miss World pageant was held this year on August 18 in the Mongolian city of Ordos, a region of China.

“I believe that the other contestants are better than Miss China. The judges should have been wise in choosing the winner. That’s what judges are for … impartial, free from prejudice … I wonder if there is still any credibility left on this kind of beauty contest. So sad,” wrote one disgruntled viewer to the Clarion Ledger.

Credibility to beauty pageants … Let’s just let that sink in for a bit. Now we move on.

“MWO you sold Miss World for the Chinese. They poured MILLIONS into the contest, so it is not very surpris[ing] that they won,” said another commenter from the Examiner. Some are calling the pageant rigged and political.

Wen Xia Yu is the second Miss China to receive the crown, but the Miss World pageant event has been hosted by various Chinese cities. The 23-year-old winner is a music student who aspires to teach music. ”When I was young I felt very lucky because so many people helped me, and I hope in the future I can help more children to feel lucky,” said Yu during the competition.

So, was the pageant rigged or did she deserve to win?
