America’s Unluckiest Woman Loses Fifth House to Hurricane
The thought of having your house destroyed by a hurricane is terrifying – but for Melanie Martinez, dubbed ‘America’s Unluckiest Woman’, it’s sort of old hat. Melanie has had five houses destroyed by five different hurricanes.
First, it was Hurricane Betsy in 1965 — then Juan, then George, then Katrina, and now Isaac. In the most recent hurricane, Melanie’s truck broke down and her family were forced to huddle together in the attic as the hurricane tore down their home around them.
“We thought we were going to die in that house,” Melanie said. Thankfully, they were saved by a neighbour.
The worst part? Melanie’s home just received a $20,000 makeover from A&E’s Hideous Houses.
With Melanie’s seeming ability to attract highly unlikely events, it’s a surprise she has managed to avoid getting hit by lightning or winning the lottery. Maybe she’s just some sort of hurricane magnet. Or maybe she should get the heck out of Louisiana.
Many have made the suggestion that Melanie consider moving out of hurricane country (have they thought this through? Would you really want a hurricane magnet moving in next to you?). Melanie, however, is planning to stay put.
“I was born here,” she said. “It’s home, home, home.”
