“Bagel Head” Is Japan’s Horrific New Beauty Trend (WATCH)

Do you love bagels? Why not make your forehead look like one! Men and women in Japan undergoing a strange new beauty treatment in which saline solution is injected into the forehead before a thumb is pressed in the middle to create a bagel-like look. Apparently, this practice has been going on for years, but is just now gaining attention around the world due to a National Geographic program called Taboo. Take a look at the bagel head video (if you can handle it):

Buzzfeed also offers 12 different versions of the bagel head trend, including one with a double bagel (go big or go home, I guess).

It’s creepy – but is getting a bagel head dangerous? According to Business Insider, possibly. Omar Ibrahimi, a dermatologist at the Connecticut Skin Institute and visiting assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, says that saline solution is used in a lot of medical procedures, but “saline solution that is too concentrated can overload the body’s capacity to process salt.” If the solution is too highly concentrated, a person could get dehydrated. In addition, if the saline solution isn’t sterile, there’s “a lot of risk of bacterial or fungal infection.” And lastly, doing this too often could stretch the skin beyond its normal elasticity.

You could argue that people in the West also do plenty of weird beauty things, from Botox to breast implants…but I kinda get those. I’m not sure I understand why this is attractive?
