Instagram ‘Sluts’ Account Sparks Riot in Sweden (VIDEO)
An Instagram account reportedly asking users to submit tips on “sluts” has sparked a massive riot outside a Swedish high school. Police are estimating around 600 angry people gathered this morning outside Plusgymnasiet high school in the Gothenburg area of Sweden, apparently in an attempt to confront a 17-year-old student who is believed to be behind the offensive account.
The Local reports the Instagram account in question had a similar MO to “revenge porn” site HunterMoore.TV (and its predecessor, IsAnyoneUp.com): Users were promised anonymity in exchange for pictures of Gothenburg’s “sluts.”
The account exploded in popularity, and eventually hosted over 200 photos of girls as young as 13, along with the victims’ names and lists of the sexual activities they had allegedly participated in.
“It grew to 7,000 to 8,000 followers. They were [pictures of] younger siblings of my friends, born around 1997 and later, that were uploaded,” a 22-year-old Gothenburg resident revealed to newspaper Aftonbladet.
Although the Instagram account was soon shut down, it was replaced with an equally offensive Facebook page. By this point, the people of Gothenburg had had enough. Offended residents organized another Facebook page, and this one called for a riot outside the high school of the student who allegedly created the accounts.
Today, they rioted.
“The protesters are kicking down lampposts and jumping on cars,” a witness told Aftonbladet. “They’re going berserk.”
Although The Local reports that things have since calmed down in Gothenburg, this likely won’t be the last we hear of it. Apparently, the student accused of creating the accounts has been taken into custody. Though it’s unclear whether this is because the student is being charged, or is simply being protected from the rioters, it seems unlikely that the angry residents of Gothenburg are just going to let this go.
The story is already spreading over Twitter, and the world has taken notice. What this person allegedly did is heinous — yet it’s not that far off from some of the things that are happening over here. And while rioting is dangerous and destructive and probably not the best solution to such a problem, we can’t help but be impressed by the rioters’ willingness to stand up and actually do something about the situation. Perhaps this will make a turning point in the fight against Internet creeps.
