United State of Pop 2012 Presents the Year in Pop Songs (VIDEO)

Each year since 2007, DJ Earworm has released a year-end mashup of the 25 hottest pop songs of the year. The DJ uses a formula based on the Billboard weekly charts to determine which 25 hit tunes defined the pop genre – and in some ways, the year itself.

Interestingly, by putting all the hottest songs of the year together in one mashup, DJ Earworm creates a unique piece that not only defines the pop genre, but mirrors the tone of the year as expressed in pop culture. So, not only is the United State of Pop a catchy tune unto itself, it’s also an interesting summation of the year’s trends – both musically and otherwise.

“Lyrically, this year there was a lot of disillusionment, awakening, transformation,” he said in an interview with Co.Create. “And musically, melodies are taking more prominence compared to the dance and rhythm oriented sound of recent years.”

Interesting. After this year’s awakening and transformation, perhaps we have some enlightenment and liberation awaiting us in 2013. And by that, I mean maybe we’ll collectively come to our senses and liberate ourselves from dubstep. One can dream.

This year’s mashup is called “Shine Brighter,” and is made up of the following 25 songs. Listen to the mashup and see if you can pick out each individual song!
