These PBS Fake Reality TV Commercials Are Perfect (VIDEOS)

Remember when reality TV shows first became a thing, and everyone was all like, “What is this crap? Do we really need both American Idol and The X Factor? They’re pretty much the same show!”

And then we got over it and now reality TV shows are the majority of what’s on television.

Even if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ve got to admit reality TV has gotten way out of hand. I mean, a Google search for the phrase “pawnbroker reality TV shows” turns up Hardcore Pawn, Combat Pawn, Pawn Stars and Beverly Hills Pawn. It’s a bit excessive, and a bit … well, dumb. Don’t you agree? New York PBS affiliate WNET does.

In an effort to raise funds so it can continue to deliver quality programming, WNET has created a series of reality TV spoof ads that highlight just how ridiculous our appetite for junk television has become. The sad thing is, it’s easy to imagine Clam Kings, Long Island Landscapers or Meet the Tanners appearing on TLC right after Dumb People Fighting About Nothing or whatever other banal show TLC’s got on its roster right now.

What do you think about the state of television programming today? Is reality TV a brain-rotting scourge or a harmless form of entertainment? Let’s talk about it in the comments.
