It’s Leonid Meteor Shower Time!

Astronomy geeks and amateur stargazers alike are getting an incredible show from the Leonid meteor shower this week as bits of debris and dust from comet Tempel-Tuttle hit the earth’s atmosphere creating amazing streaks and bursts of light that can easily be seen by the naked eye.

While the meteor shower is predicted to last from November 13 to 20, the pros say the peak of the spectacle (and it is a spectacle!) is tonight, and the best time to see the Leonid meteor shower in full effect is between 1:30am and sunrise.

Named the Leonid shower because the most meteors appear to come from the constellation Leo, it’s the best show in the sky after the Perseids meteor shower that takes place in late August every year.

Scientists say this year’s Leonid shower should yield, at its peak, 20-30 meteors per hour as the comet makes its annual trip around the sun. If you’re not already a savvy skywatcher, here are a few tips for optimal meteor shower viewing:

1. Find a place with as little light pollution as possible – in urban areas, find the middle of a big park or get to the roof of a tall building. Better yet, get out of the city if you can.

2. Bring blankets or reclining beach chairs – you’ll want to be able to keep your eyes on the sky comfortably.

3. Bundle up and bring a thermos full of something warm and tasty to sip on. Hot chocolate, tea, mulled wine, anyone?

4. Make it a party. Seriously, what better way to enjoy the amazing feats of our universe than with a bunch of friends?

5. Bring a date. Oh, how romantic!

5 Ways to Celebrate National Grouch Day 2009

Hey chumps! In case you missed the memo, today is National Grouch Day. Think of it as a day to drop the “nice” act and allow your inner grouch a chance to barf all over everyone’s day. Not sure how to celebrate? A few suggestions:

1. Rant loudly and often. About anything and everything that you see, hear or do today. Let ‘er rip and get all the black sticky evil stuff you ordinarily keep to yourself out of your system. Won’t that feel lousy?

2. Find every opportunity to use the words “I told you so”. Be as condescending to co-workers, friends and family members as possible. Aim to alienate everyone you see.

3. Become a road-rager. If you’re a normally calm and conscientious driver, plan on being that total a**hole driver who tailgates, cuts people off, refuses to use a turn signal and parks millimeters from other cars. Toss in some rude gestures and screaming for good measure.

4. USE ALL CAPS in your work and personal emails, twitters and Facebook messages.

5. Aggressively tell everyone your problems and do not let them close the conversation. Unburden yourself and make everyone within earshot feel uncomfortable and awkward.

Remember, you have 364 days to make amends to all the people you piss off today, so go forth and grouch!

David Letterman Extortion Plot Revealed

People who tuned into David Letterman’s “The Late Show” last night got more than just jokes when Letterman revealed to the audience that he was the recent victim of extortion over his admitted sexual affairs with co-workers.

During the taping of his show in New York, Letterman told the confused audience that he was threatended to either pay $2 million, or risk the workplace trysts being made public. Explaining the string of events, Letterman said that three weeks ago he received a package from a person who claimed to have details about the relationships.

“In the back seat of my car, there’s a package that I don’t recognize,” he said. “What this is, is a guy is going to write a screenplay about me and he’s going to take all the terrible stuff that he knows about my life and he’s going to put it into a movie unless I give him some money.”

Letterman went on to explain that he had to testify before a grand jury, and acknowledge the sexual relationships with members of his staff as part of the extortion case.

“I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family,” he said. “I felt menaced by this, and I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done.”

“The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show,” he said.

Letterman went on to explain his role in the sting operation that saw the extortionist (rumoured to be a producer for CBS true crime show “48 Hours”) arrested and suspened from his job at the network.
