At the age of 90, Oscar winner and Hollywood bombshell Jennifer Jones died today. Famous for her Oscar winning performance in “The Song of Bernadette,” Jones also received five other nominations during her exceptional career. She passed away at her Malibu home this morning with her son at her side. Although unconfirmed, Jones likely died of natural causes.

During her career, Jones married one of Hollywood’s biggest producers, David O. Selznick. After he passed in 1965, she went on to marry a wealthy industrialist by the name of Norton Simon. Simon passed away in 1993 and left his wife the Norton Simon Museum, in which she served on the board of directors.

A while ago, tired of eating the same old Whole Foods bulk granola, I stumbled upon A GEM. The company is called Mix My Granola, and they have this super fun website where you can make your own granola mix. Now, taking a step back, the only reason I love going to frozen yogurt places like Yogurtland is because I get to mix together my own concoctions, based on whatever mood I’m in that day. Strawberry-Kiwi yogurt with almonds and chocolate covered gummy bears? Yes please.  Oh wait, don’t they also have mini peanut butter cups, coconut shavings, and dried cranberries. YUM.

Anyhow, I digress. I find this website, and immediately I’m engulfed in my familiar, “I’m the smartest mixer in the world” feeling I get when I go to Yogurtland. You get to choose your base granola, then pick all your mix-ins (dried fruit, nuts, etc.) to make a completely custom (AND HEALTHY!) granola mix. I then proceeded to make the all-time best granola mix (because I’m the smartest mixer in the world), and checked out. My mix: organic granola, cranberries, dried blueberries, goji berries, and roasted almonds.

Well, today I got my mix in the mail. Soon after, I tore it open and noticed a few really neat things:

1. Cute packaging.  A definite plus.
2. They named the product after me!  (You can choose any name when you checkout and it’s printed on the label!) I love stuff like that!
3. They print on your custom label and the date it was prepared, so you know it’s not prepackaged, but is fresh.
4. It looks like it was hand-signed by the person who actually mixed it. I love personal things when I deal with companies, especially over the Internet.
5. For those who are nutrition conscience, it has a custom nutritional information panel. Can you create the tastiest, healthiest mix?

So, all in all, I’m very pleased with this product (and company). Furthermore, I’m planning on ordering up a bunch of mixes for my girlfriends for Christmas. I mean, since I’m the world’s best mixer, there’s no way they wouldn’t like it, right?

Today we are attending one of the biggest Twitter conferences of the year: The 140 Character Conference. Taking place at the home of “The Oscars,” Hollywood’s Kodak Theater, the conference will be exploring the, “State of Twitter.”

The 140 Character Conference has been around for a couple of years now and everyone from Wyclef Jean to Tony Hawk have participated in this cool “State of the Twitter” before.

According to reports Phillips has yet to press charges on Hundley’s stalking behavior and no restraining order has been issued.

This real-life “Fatal Attraction” will probably end up being converted into a reality show on VH1, but until then, I think Hundley should find a new boyfriend. This guy is old enough to be her grandfather and will likely lose most of his money after the divorce is official.

As the smarmy headline alludes, I am not a big fan of homeowner associations. I understand their appeal, that they keeps property values high, communities “safe” and so on, but more often than not their draconian rules seem to offer more room for complaint than for praise. Case in point, today’s story about a six-year-old girl who is likely about to be evicted from the home of her grandparents. Here’s the details.

Kimberly, the six-year-old in mention, currently lives with her two grandparents (who are also her legal guardians), Jimmy and Judy Stottler, after her mother had lost custody of the young girl after charges of a “chronic drug problem,” states MSNBC. The problem, though, is that Jimmy and Judy live in a Florida Retirement Community with bylaws that state all residents must be over the age of 55, with no exception. And since Kimberly is not of age, a case has been brought to the local police department to evict her from the community, at which point she would be picked up by child services and placed in a foster home, unless the Stottlers can move first.

Complicating the situation unfortunately, is the recent crash of the housing market — which has hit Florida particularly hard — making it near impossible for the Stottler’s to sell their house and move elsewhere. Their house has been on the market for over a year now, starting at a price of $250,000 and dropping to $129,000, and still there have been no interested buyers.

A MSNBC reporter talked to local residents who appeared to have little sympathy for the plight of the young girl. One resident plainly stated, “I believe they should go.” Another, Leland Wheeler the Lakes Homeowners Association President, when asked if he was worried he would become the bad guy, responded, “No the sheriff will. I will merely be the president of the board who is trying to enforce the policies of our association that she agreed to when she moved in.”

While the law appears to be on the side of the Homeowners Association, the result seems more than a little unfair. What is not unfair though, in the eyes of this blogger, is the bad publicity the Lakes Homeowners Association is now receiving. If you ask me, they deserve every last word of it.

Former Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor surprised fans and admirers alike by marrying his very lovely fiance, Mariqueen Maandig, over the weekend. Surprised because, even though the two had been engaged since April, no word on a wedding date had been mentioned since. Breaking the news was Reznor’s former bandmate Danny Lohner, who tweeted on Saturday, “Goths the world over will mourn this day — off to a wedding.” The tweet was later followed by another which said, “CONGRATS my nagguh!” with a photo of the happy couple dancing.

Good for Reznor I say. For those unaware, Mariqueen Maandig was not only the singer for Detroit psychedelic mainstays West Indian Girl, but also has modeled for the likes of Playboy and other magazines. However, both seem to be settling down now what with Reznor retiring from Nine Inch Nails in September and Mariqueen quitting her band in August.

According to a statement released earlier today, the Miss America Organization (MAO) has picked conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh to judge their 2010 pageant. Taking place January 30 at the Planet Hollywood Restaurant & Casino in Las Vegas, Limbaugh will be one of seven judges presiding over the contest. Furthermore, the conservative pundit will also be serving “as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network, as well as introduce the first Go Green platform for MAO.”

First up, I realize beauty pageants aren’t exactly feminist outings and all, but Rush “I coined feminazi” Limbaugh? The guy who said in 1992 in an interview with Time, “Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.” Three time divorcee, Rush Limbaugh, is judging Miss America? What. The. Fuck.

Second, he’ll be introducing the first Go Green platform for Miss America? Umm, is Miss America aware that Rush Limbaugh, and his 14 million weekly listeners are a big part of why we can’t get comprehensive climate reform in this country? The guy regularly refers to the scientific community as “environmentalist wackos” for claiming global warming is real.

Third, and I realize politics really shouldn’t be involved here, but the guy not only answered the following question, “If you could send us 400 words on your hope for the Obama presidency” with “I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails,” but he also has referred to the President as “Barack the Magic Negro” on more than one occasion.

And this guy is judging Miss America?

I realize this as much for ratings as anything else — what with Perez Hilton giving Miss USA continual coverage and “controversy” — but sometimes too far is too far. At this point, I can’t really see how any self-respecting woman could be involved in anyway with this pageant. What a joke.

As previously reported, Usher had planned to release his highly anticipated new single “Papers” today. And, don’t worry, he didn’t disappoint. Released earlier this afternoon, the first single off his new album, Raymond vs. Raymond (originally titled, Monster), can now be found all across the internet (check below).

First impression? Very, very good. Now I’ve long been a fan of Usher — great looks, better moves, and, oh!, what a voice! — but I had, admittedly, had some worries about this single. Not that his last album wasn’t great, it was, but, you know, it just wasn’t Confessions. This one, however, seems to be a return to that mindset. That is: it’s highly confessional.

The song, produced by Sean Garrett, is about his recent divorce from Tameka Foster Raymond, and doesn’t leave bare any details. The “papers”, after all, that the song is referring to are his divorce papers (ouch!). And that’s just the start. Listen below:

Usher – “Player”

Late last week David Letterman admitted to his Late Night audience that he had had more than a few sexual affairs with staff members over the years. The reason for the moment of honesty? Extortion. A then anonymous source had tried to blackmail Letterman out of $2 million in exchange for keeping secret the “misdeeds” of the popular Late Night host. However, Letterman stepped out in front of the charge and addressed them head-on, taking any leverage the would-be extortionist may have had. Furthermore, authorities were able to setup a sting operation, discover the name of the perpetrator, Joe Halderman, and arrest him later that day.

Since then inquisitive minds have been in search for Letterman’s alleged affairs, and they haven’t come up empty handed. First up, Stephanie Birkett, a 34-year-old former staffer. Birkett had joined the Late Show in 1997, and sometime between then and 2003 had had a relationship with Letterman. It has also come to light that Birkett had kept a diary during that time, a diary that it now appears got into the hands of Joe Halderman (the extortionist). In fact, some sources are reporting the two, Birkett and Halderman, were dating when this whole incident occurred (i.e. last week).

Unsurprising, as Birkett now seems to have been marked with the “famous-for-sleeping-with-a-celebrity” status, she has since been offered the cover of Playboy. No word yet, though, if she has accepted or rejected the offer.

Also reported to have slept with Letterman? Former staffer Holly Hester, who claims to have had a relationship with the Late Night host during the ’90s.

According to a statement released earlier today, super-hunk and funny-man James Franco has accepted a two-month long stint on ABC’s long-running series General Hospital. As of now few details are out, however, we do know that Franco’s character will be the “worst nightmare” of Jason Morgan, who, from what I understand, is some sort of mobster badass on the daytime soap. As to when Franco will first appear in Port Charles? Looks to be November 20. So mark your calendars.

Now for the big question: Just why exactly is this popular leading man making his way toward daytime television? Well, sources are remaining tight-lipped. However, this won’t be Franco’s first appearance on the small screen. After all, his acting debut was on the (all-time Twirlit favorite) TV series, Freaks & Geeks. Also, Franco’s still making movies too. In fact, he just finished filming for Howl a beat biopic on Allen Ginsburg, which comes out in 2010.

Jill Farren Phelps, executive producer for General Hospital, had this to say, “It’s an honor that an actor of Franco’s caliber would choose to spend some of his valuable time in Port Charles.”

However, I think that would have all been different had I gone to Magdalene Manor. Unfamiliar? Well, it’s a Christian Women’s retreat, but with a fun little twist. Instead of teaching you how to be woman, God’s way, Magdalene Manor teaches you how to be a player, God’s way. That is, how to lure the men in your life to God via your great looks and natural charm. So instead of Bible studies, you get Messiah Makeovers, low-carb communion, and speaking in tongues 101. After all — as the camp advertises — while God sees your heart, your date sees your face. Bam!

Okay, okay, so the camp’s probably not real. But a girl can hope, can’t she?

Yesterday, Tori Spelling was hospitalized from a then undiagnosed stomach ailment, though, later that night she was released. Fast-forward to this morning, however, and she’s back at the hospital, undiagnosed stomach ailment and all. According to Us, Tori “wasn’t feeling better today so she returned to the hospital for more tests.” While doctors are still unsure, Tori is pretty sure it’s either a flu or a bug that’s been making the rounds. Apparently her kids as well as her husband Dean McDermott had had similar symptoms earlier in the week. They’re calling it the “McDermott Family Bug.” Catchy. And a whole lot nicer sounding than swine-flu!

Keeping us up-to-date on the story is Dean, who’s been Tweeting intermittently on his wife’s health. First last night, “T is in the hospital now with severe stomach pains. We’re trying to get her comfortable.” And once again this morning, “Just out of the hospital. After a battery of tests, no conclusive answers. She still feels terrible. Hope it passes soon. She’s in a lot of pain.”

Let’s hope the next Tweet brings some answers.

According to US Weekly, Hollywood’s favorite couple, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, finally called it quits after three years. Inside sources say this relationship was sporadic and the two hardly ever spent time with each other. Rumored to have been over months ago, the details as to what exactly happened are still uncertain.

Like many Hollywood couples, it’s hard to specify what went wrong and in most cases the gossip reported is usually false. Timberlake and Biel did a pretty good job of staying out of the paparazzi eye. Compared to Brangelina and Speidy, this couple was able to steer clear of a corny nickname.

As various reports come out about how Biel won’t accept the relationship being over or Timberlake making it a point to say he ended it first, gossip blogs will continue to post whatever grabs the reader. Hopefully true fans see past all the hype and check out their celebrity twitters to see what’s really going on!

Kate Gosselin will be taking over the family next season on TLC as her show “Kate Plus 8″ looks to profile her life after Jon. Launching in November, TLC wanted to readjust the once prime-time hit show “it only makes sense for us to refresh and recalibrate the program to keep pace with the family.”

Kate, who’s been active on shows like “The View,” will be profiled as a single mother caring for her 8 children. I’m sure we’ll get a few guest appearances from Jon, but TLC has emphasized their spotlight on Kate.

The show will probably never be as popular as it was before, but I’m sure Kate will bring her loyal fan base back. As for Jon, it doesn’t look like he’ll be offered his own show. Then again, with all the craziness in reality TV land, I wouldn’t be surprised.

We had our warnings. All the proper signs. First there was Garden State, popularizing brooding indie-rock to a whole new generation of college-aged girls (and saving their lives too!). Soon after the OC, Gossip Girls, hell even Grey’s Anatomy followed, each taking the time to offer up Modest Mouse type b-sides in service of teen angst and open-heart surgeries. But now we’ve all entered a whole new era: indie-rock is now, no-doubts-about-it, mainstream.

Released earlier today is the official tracklist for the soundtrack to Twilight: New Moon, the second film in America’s newest (and favorite-est) vampire series ever – sorry Buffy fans! Actually, to be more accurate, it’d be better described as America’s favorite current series period (vampire or not). After all, few movies have been as hyped or as anticipated as this one. Hell, the world premiere for its theatrical trailer was the featured highlight of the VMAs. Well it was before the now infamous “Kanye Incident” that is. Point is: this series is HUGE. Especially amongst teenage girls.

And it’s amongst that demographic that indie-rock (as well as indie-tronica and whatever else is on this disc) will find a new home. Yep, that same demographic that used to buy Britney Spears CDs en masse? They’ll now be buying LPs by the likes of Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, and, Lord help us all, Animal Collective. So folks, enjoy your indie while you can, cause once the dreaded “teeny-bopper” (oh no!) has latched on to your scene, well, that’s that. After all, isn’t the whole point of listening to a “Grizzly Bear” to let your peers know you’re better than all that? (Can’t really imagine a reason otherwise).

First up: Too cute! Second: Way too cute! Third … Okay, okay, I’ll slow down on my gushing for a moment or two and get to the story. So, not so long ago (read: last week) Katherine Heigl announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she and her handsome singer-songwriter husband, Josh Kelley, would be adopting a baby girl from South Korea. Fast-forward to today and not only is the adoption complete, but there are now super-cute baby pictures too! (Sorry, I get a little excited about babies).

Anyway, here are the details. The young baby girl is 10-months-old and is named Nancy Leigh, although – according to a post by Mrs. Heigl on her Jason Heigl Foundation website – Nancy’s “official” nickname will be Naleigh. Which is pretty fun to say. Okay, I think that about covers it at this point. Now back to the gushing over the family’s oh-so-adorable semi-matching outfits (i.e. the fun left-to-right solid color sweater blend!).

The broadcast continued with no further mention of the incident and that was that. Well, that is until the clip made its way to YouTube and Facebook, then becoming viral this morning. Now it’s everywhere. Most commentators are describing the scene as a “bizarre nonsequitur”, but I don’t know if I buy that. You don’t just say, “Keep fucking that chicken,” for no reason do you? I think there’s a deeper story here.

The VMAs. Who knew the annual MTV music video award show could still produce so much controversy, scandal and so forth, making it necessary for artists to continue apologizing, even two days after the fact. I mean, this is an award show based around a medium (the music video) that, simply put, is no longer relevant, least of all to MTV. Yet, here we are, on a Tuesday, and the biggest news story of the day is did Kanye apologize or didn’t he? And what does Taylor Swift really think?

And whattayaknow? Round two has just popped up guess who wants to apologize next? Lil’ Mama! It would appear that the young rapper – and judge on America’s Best Dance Crew – is now feeling a little remorseful for her spontaneous stage appearance during the end of Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s performance of “Empire State of Mind”. Apparently, she’s realizing, it’s not too cool to jump up at the end of someone’s performance and try and steal the spotlight. I mean, it’s not like Kanye had just been booed for the same move now is it?

So, once again late to the Kanye party, Lil’ Mama is trying to apologize as much as she can – and to anyone who’ll listen. Her thoughts: “I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys. I admire them and look up to them as role models. ‘Empire State of Mind’ had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up on stage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY.”

Which, okay, a little understandable. You got caught up in the moment, you couldn’t help it. Same as Kanye, blah, blah, blah and so forth. We got it. But really, this apology is as unnecessary as Lil’ Mama’s appearance on the stage. It just was not that big of a deal. That said, this apologetic mood funneling around the VMAs is kind of fun. So let’s hear it: who else needs to apologize?

Russell Brand for – somehow – being even more unfunny than last year? MTV for – who knows why – selecting Russell Brand for their Award Show host yet again? Are they really that eager for irrelevancy? Maybe Lady Gaga for her costumes? I don’t know, help me out! Who should be next on the apology-train?

Earlier this morning Taylor Swift appeared on The View to discuss her career, the VMAs, and, of course, the now infamous Kanye Incident. That is, when Kanye West interrupted Taylor’s Best Female Video Award acceptance speech to let the world know that, not Swift, but Beyonce deserved the award instead. Which, while this blogger might technically agree on, was beyond rude and a total jackass of a move. In other words, standard Kanye. Since then, we’ve had the opportunity to hear Kanye’s side of the story on his blog, Leno, and just about any other platform he’s found himself on.

So now we have Taylor Swift’s reaction. Responding to questions from The View, Swift detailed her thought process of the event: “I think my overall thought process was something like, ‘Wow I can’t believe I won. This is awesome. Don’t trip and fall. I’m going to get to thank the fans, this is so cool — oh, Kanye West is here. Kanye West is here, cool haircut, what are you doing there? And then ouch, and then I guess I’m not going to get to thank the fans.”

Soon after, Swift was backstage fighting back tears. “I’m not gonna say that I wasn’t riled by it. I had to perform live five minutes later, so I had to get myself back to the place where I could perform.” And that’s exactly what she did. Minutes later she charmed those in attendance with a spectacular rendition of “You Belong With Me”.

As to Kanye, who on Leno promised a face-to-face apology, Swift remarked, “he has not personally reached out or anything.” Ouch.

Earlier today reality TV star Tila Tequila revealed her bruised arms to TMZ reporters and other cameramen just outside her hotel in Beverly Hills. The bruises represent the first visual evidence of Tila’s recent altercation with her boyfriend Shawne Merriman, a defender for the San Diego Chargers. According to reports, Merriman had choked and restrained Tila last weekend resulting in a trip to the hospital for Tila and a trip to jail for Merriman. As the story goes, Tila then performed a citizen arrest against her boyfriend, charging him for two felonies: false imprisonment and battery. Asked today whether she will go through with the charges, Tila said, “I don’t know, we’ll see.”

Merriman, however, is out on bail and defending himself saying he was trying to “encourage her to stay safe until transportation could be provided.” But, even if he was (I could see it going either way), that still does not excuse his behavior. Especially if choking was involved.

Caster Semenya, an incredibly fast runner from South Africa, made headlines last August when she beat the world record in the 800 meter dash at the World Championships in Berlin. But the headlines weren’t just for her record run, they were also in regards to questions about her eligibility. Since Semenya not only had an irregularly deep voice, but also a surprisingly muscular build as well as a testosterone level three times greater than a normal woman, some officials had questioned her sex. That is, they weren’t sure if she was female or not.

Looking to beat back the rumors, the 18-year-old runner recently posed for You Magazine, a popular magazine in South Africa, showing off her feminine side. Trading her pants for a dress, cornrows for a crimped wave and her normal spandex outfit for heals, makeup and jewelry, it was hard to deny, she looked much better. And she felt better too, saying, “I’d like to dress up more often and wear dresses, but I never get the chance.” She went on to say, “I’d also like to learn to do my own make-up.”

Behold! Long-term celebrity couple Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have just announced the birth of their second child, a baby boy! And he’s got quite the, uh, interesting name. Sparrow James Midnight Madden, to be precise. Officially announced via a post on Richie’s blog, the happy couple let the world know they were all doing well this morning, stating: “In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009 Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes.”

The newborn Sparrow James represents the couple’s second child, the first of which is Harlow Winter Kate Madden, their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Still, even with the family expanding, the young couple still have no plans for wedding bells any time soon. Talking to Larry King back in May, Nicole said, “I think for both of us, we are going to do it because we want to, not because that’s what you do.” And apparently, with two kids in tow, it’s not something they want to do. Yet. I guess.

Lorne Michaels, the creator, producer and all-around mastermind behind Saturday Night Live, dropped big news today, announcing that both Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson will no longer be on the show. A surprise, to say the least, for not only Watkins and Wilson, but for the staff and SNL fans as well. Especially for Michaela Watkins, as she had found a lot of success this past season. Now, SNL had already made news earlier this week when it hired both Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad on for the 35th Season, but at the time fans of the show believed they would be additions, not replacements.

Watkins responded to the news by expressing “shock” and “sadness” as “it just felt premature.” Nevertheless, not one to stay down she also said, “But on some level I feel like there are so many opportunities and things that I want to do in the future and now they’ll just happen sooner rather than later.” As well as, “I just want to make people laugh, and I want to do that the best way possible.”

Let’s hope this is just the beginning of her career.

Last April, Tiffany Shepherd, then a 30-year-old Biology teacher and mother of three, was fired amidst a local scandal in which pictures of her wearing a bikini were found on the Internet. Fast-forward to present day and Shepherd has made the news once again, this time for her recent entry into the world of porn. Figures, right? White Trash Mom Becomes Porn Star? Not so fast now. Let’s take a look at the story.

Starting, once again, in April, Tiffany Shepherd had been recently divorced and could no longer afford to pay the bills and take care of her three children. So she picked up a second job with Smokin’ Em Charters, a boating service in which customers can fish beside bikini-clad women. Not ideal, but far from “controversial” either. After all, a single mom’s gotta do what a single mom’s gotta do. And as Shepherd notes, she never wore a thong nor did she ever take her top off, rather she wore what she would normally wear every day to the beach. Her bikini. Four days later, Shepherd was unexpectedly fired.

While the Port St. Lucie High School insisted (convincingly) the problem was not the new job – or the photos on the company’s website – but rather her long record of unexcused absences, over thirty days worth, it was hard not question the suddenness of the decision. Then came in the media.
