"New Moon," has all of us in a tizzy over the next installment in the "Twilight" movie series. Here's my review...

Disclaimer: No, I did not read the “Twilight” or “New Moon” books and am just basing my review on watching the feature films that were produced by Summit Entertainment and star the ever-popular Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Just FYI for all you Twi-hards out there. There are a few spoilers below…WARNING

I was not one of the original Twi-hards that helped Summit Entertainment make $70.5 million during the opening weekend of Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight,” movie that was based on Stephanie Meyer’s beloved book series. Instead, I came home one Friday night after a long night of vodka tonics and proceeded to watch the “Twilight,” DVD about five times in a row. No, I’m not kidding.

Was it the haunting stares between Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart,) as well as the gorgeously thick sexual tension between the two photogenic teenagers? Or was it the fact that their unrequited love represents that one person(s) in your life that you knew that you could never have even if those feelings were present?

In “New Moon,” director Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Golden Compass) takes the rein and focuses on the story between emotionally broken Bella and the suddenly uber-buff Jacob (Taylor Lautner) who has his own hairy secret that he’s keeping from his lady love. While watching the scene in which brooding Edward breaks up with Bella, seemingly for good, my own heart stopped a bit as I remembered what it was like when my own first true relationship crumbled. You know, that one that had you dreaming about weddings, happiness, and eternal bliss. And then the world came crashing down.

Jacob is the nice guy who nurses Bella back to health by being her friend, even though he wants more. And each time Bella rebuffed him, I wanted to shake her and say, “Why don’t you just go for the guy who doesn’t screw you over…even if you’re obsessed with Edward. I get that he’s hot, sultry, and eternally 17, but Jacob saved your life, cared for you when Edward left you in the forest, and will do anything for you.”

TEAM JACOB.

The movie delves into what happens when you allow your love for another person to become greater than yourself or your own self-worth. And what if the love of your life breaks your heart — does time stop or do you just stop living? It’s 2010 and our heroine, Bella Swan, is seemingly pulled in various directions by the whims of either Edward or Jacob. I kept rooting for her to be pro-active and make the right choice and choose the guy who would be good to her instead of the one who kept breaking her heart. I’m not blaming her character, but when she finally got the chance to make a pro-active decision that would bring her closer to her ultimate love, Bella didn’t even make him work for an apology. It was as if all those months of heartache had never happened.

Is this what we all do in love and relationships for that one person that we’re crazy for? No matter how much they stamp on your heart or break promises, you take them back … just because. I guess that’s the eternal wonder, mystery, and frightening power about that thing called love.

No matter what you may think about love, I’m pretty sure that you’ll enjoy this movie, especially if you’re into love triangles between vampires and werewolves.

For further analysis, check out what our KIDGLUE editor thinks of “New Moon.”

Thanks to ALL of you who’ve commented, tweeted, dugg, and blogged about Twirlit’s Mix My Granola giveaway. We’re just as obsessed with breakfast as you are!

Now, without further ado, the three winners who will now be able to mix and match ingredients for their own perfect unique granola blend are:

1) Chuck
“My favorite breakfast is a mix of regular cereal and granola. But instead of just plain milk, I use milk or water mixed with chocolate or vanilla protein power. This comes out much thicker than milk and is delicious over the cereal!”

2) Sara
“Obviously, I meant to write this: My favorite breakfast is yogurt with sliced banana and cereal…or granola!”

3) Gina
“Oat bran with all sorts of goodies on top! YUM!!”

We’ll be in touch with you shortly with your Mix My Granola gift certificates. Thank you to ALL of you who participated, and stay tuned for the next Twirlit Giveaway Wednesday!!!

Sincerely,
The Twirlit Crew

Beyonce is used to being at the top of Billboard charts, rocking her booty in “Single Ladies” all by herself. Well, herself and two really good dancers. But now she’s changing it up, and picking up a partner in crime. No not, Jay-Z. Lady Gaga! Yep, the two pop stars are collaborating together in a new video titled, “Video Phone.” And I must say, Lady Gaga looks shockingly, well, simple. And in a good way. Beyonce, of course, looks great too. Check out the hot new video below:

Are you feeling stuck in your life and work, or are trying to figure out how to NOT be so jaded? Here are some tips on how to be positive when things really seem to suck.

I wrote this Change This manifesto when I was feeling particularly stuck, uncreative and facing the wall of disappointment and rejection, and so I thought I would share it to those facing similar circumstances. I hope that this manifesto gives you some laughs, inspiration, or a new perspective on an old situation. And a BIG/HUGE shout out and thanks to Dylan at ChangeThis for all of your editing and, of course, everyone who voted for this proposal to be made into a manifesto. Thank you!

Being a creative soul, there are times when you feel that no one understands your point of view and how you see the world. The best part about writing is that you can showcase your voice, and that’s something that no amount of negativity or rejection or disappointment can take away from you. So if you have a big idea or goal, just go for it. You never know what can happen.

Our Twirlit Crew went to the annual West Hollywood Halloween parade and... let's just say that after going to this annual costume extravaganza, nothing really shocks you anymore. Yes, we know..this video is late.

(NOTE: REGARDING THE TIMING OF THIS VIDEO…BETTER LATE THAN NEVER)
You may have seen some of our past video interviews with Funny or Die, The UCB Facebook Show, and Dr. Murad, but we’re going to be trying out videos that are more random and on the fly. We’d love your feedback on the types of videos that you’d like us to shoot.
We’re game.

Aysha M and myself went to the West Hollywood Halloween parade and, to say the least, it was quite interesting to see this year’s top pop culture “celebrities,” out and about. There were many “Balloon boys,” as well as “Octomom’s,” and though we didn’t find a “Jon and Kate,” I’m pretty sure there were many of those there as well. Maybe they were hiding behind their kids? Check out the video:

We love breakfast foods here at Twirlit, especially me. I could eat granola for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Check out our latest giveaway with Mix My Granola, a company that allows you to mix and match your very own unique granola mix.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is also my favorite. From the days when I used to eat way-too-sugary cereals as a child to the days when my college roommates and I would hoard granola from the dining hall, breakfast foods have always been, for me, the tops. Even as a working woman there are days when I’d rather curl up with a bowl of crunchy granola/cereal for dinner instead of putting together a time-intensive concoction. (Am I in the minority here?)

Well, we’re excited to let you know about Mix My Granola, a start up company that began because the three founders (Andreas, Matt and Raoul) were in a quandary over which combination of granola is the tastiest. And boom! The idea for Mix My Granola, where you can mix and match the ingredients for your own perfect unique granola blend, was born.

From choosing your base granola to mix-ins as varied as antioxidant rich goji berries, dried blueberries, dried strawberries, dried raspberries, almonds, and fun things like gummy bears, crystallized ginger and M&Ms, Mix My Granola gives you an out-of-the-box way to create your perfect granola mix.

This week, we’re giving away THREE GIFT CERTIFICATES for $10 each, that will go toward making your own Mix My Granola mix.

Here are a few ways to enter:

Leave a comment telling us what is your favorite breakfast item?

Follow Twirlit.com on Twitter

Tweet this giveaway on your own Twitter

Link back to this giveaway on your blog

Digg this giveaway

The more times you enter, the more chances you have to win! Just remember to leave a comment for each contest entry you complete.

Note: Please use a valid e-mail address.

One lucky winner will be chosen randomly. Giveaway ends Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Winners will be reached by email, and announced on the blog on 11/18/09.

Good luck!

The Body Shop is not only known for their fruity body butters and environmentally friendly products, but they also have a line of lip glosses that have me slightly obsessed as well.

There are a few things that I cannot live without. First, my morning coffee, and second, a good lip gloss or lipstick. Why? Well, if I don’t have my morning coffee, my crankiness quotient increases by at least 20 percent, and if I don’t have my lip gloss, well, I tend to look paler than usual. Not good. Did I mention that I don’t look good in dark lip colors?

So, when I came across The Body Shop’s High Shine Lip Treatment, I was excited to try the product because I like just a little hint of color with shimmer in my lip products. Here’s what they say about the product on their website:

- Pearl pigments give lips a glimmering finish.
- Provide effective hydration with an ultra-glossy, dermatologist-approved formulation that is long-lasting and non-sticky.
- Moisturizing Community Trade marula oil from Namibia helps to repair skin’s moisture barrier, leaving lips soft and supple.”

As someone who is usually on the go between meetings and appointments, when it is essential that I look professional and well-groomed, I need a lip gloss that will immediately add color and softness to my lips. Most recently, I had a video shoot and realized that I had left my makeup bag inside my apartment and was unable to stop at a drugstore to get another lipstick. All I had was this Hi-Shine lip treatment and, it turns out, that the product added just enough color to be noticeable as well as adding shine/shimmer which always looks good on-camera.

Granted if you’re going for a vixen look, this is not the product for you, but if you need a subtle colored lip gloss that adds shine and that you can wear all day, I’d check out Body Shop’s Hi-Shine Lip Treatment.

For some of us, lunch is a packed sandwich or salad that we eat at our work desk. Perhaps a yogurt or granola bar as a snack. Well for Russian Billionaire, Roman Abramovich, lunch means dropping $47,229.09. No joke.

Most of us are changing our spending habits, whether we’ve been directly or indirectly affected by the Great Recession, but there are those that are definitely not watching their pennies…err, I mean billions.

Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire who is worth a cool $8.5 billion, recently spent $47,229.09 for lunch at famed eatery, Nello’s, a popular New York eatery amongst city elites, including celebrities such as Jay-Z and Beyonce. Items that Abramovich and his lunch party feasted on include:

2 Truffle Carpaccio at $200
2 Cristal Rose Magnums at $10,000
2 Chateau Petrus at $10,000
3 La Tache Romanee at $15,000

Let’s not forget that the tip for this delicious and uber-extravagant meal was $7,328. Oh to be a waitress in NYC. Meanwhile, back down at earth, my granola bar/sandwich combo are looking ever so sad and boring…sigh.

Waiting tables never looked so good.

Lee Daniels' harrowing film "Precious" is about an obese teenager who is mentally and physically abused, and it is garnering tons of buzz. Will you watch it?

If you told any film studio executive that a film about an obese African-American teenager who is mentally and physically abused by her family and almost everyone around her, is in the running to be 2009’s must-see film, he/she would probably give you a tight smile and ask you to leave the office.

But reality is stranger than fiction and at this year’s AFI Film festival, it was all about “Precious,” the harrowing story adapted from the novel, “Push,” by Sapphire, about Claireece Precious Jones, a 16-year-old pregnant teenager who is trapped in a world of abuse and is given a chance to learn to read and write at an alternative school. It even has Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry on board to help promote the film…not that it needs any at this point, because the work stands on its own.

The grim description of the film does little justice to the sense of hope that the characters bring to the film, especially from newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, as well as from Mariah Carey playing a supporting role as a jaded social worker. Carey was told to come to the set with zero makeup, no car service, and not even a hint of blush. The R&B superstar is barely recognizable, but is being lauded by critics for giving the performance of her career. And let’s not forget Mo’Nique who is known for her bawdy humor on comedy shows, but morphs into a monster of abuse onscreen. Talk about acting chops.

Lee Daniels, the director of “Precious” tells the NYTimes that, “‘Precious’ is so not Obama. ‘Precious’ is so not P.C. What I learned from doing the film is that even though I am black, I’m prejudiced. I’m prejudiced against people who are darker than me. When I was young, I went to a church where the lighter-skinned you were, the closer you sat to the altar. Anybody that’s heavy like Precious — I thought they were dirty and not very smart. Making this movie changed my heart. I’ll never look at a fat girl walking down the street the same way again.”

I'm a woman who can't live without good conditioner. This is good conditioner.

I have thick hair that gets unruly and misbehaves on a regular basis. As a cost-conscious shopper (who isn’t these days?), I’m very much aware of the difference between using quality beauty products and using products that may be a few dollars cheaper, but don’t get the job done. I think that you should skimp on products that don’t need to be brand name and super expensive, but that you should spend money on the products that make you feel your best. Enter Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm which was recommended to me by a hairstylist friend who said, “Girl, your hair is too dry for drugstore brands. You need to try this Conditioning balm.”

So I did. This balm nourishes & repairs dry, stressed hair and was also the winner of Allure Magazine’s “2007 Reader’s Choice Award”. It is also said to: “… deeply replenish hair with the basic elements needed to moisturize and restructure. It’s formula combines pure botanical extracts of Rosemary and Golden Seal with deep conditioners that rejuvenate dry, damaged hair. Hair recovers its natural shine, silkiness, softness.”

Usually this type of marketing is what every hair care brand puts in their pretty colorful bottle, but Biolage is the real deal. After I started using this product, my hair not only stopped being unruly and tangled, but it started looking healthier and softer, without adding tons of other products, too. As of now, I usually buy an inexpensive shampoo and use it in conjunction with Biolage conditioning balm, and the results are fantastic.

This product may be very goopy or thick to some of you out there, and if you fall into that category, I recommend that you only use it 3-4 times per week. Application is similar to other conditioners in that you leave it in for 1-3 minutes after shampooing your hair. Then, once you rinse it out and start to style, you’ll definitely notice the lack of tangles and how much softer your hair is to touch.

I’m a fan for life, as anything that can calm my crazy hair down will be in my shower stall forever.

Editor’s Note: You may have read our previous Twirlit story with Sloane Berrent of Causemopolitan fame, who recently completed a fellowship with the micro-finance organization, Kiva. She’s someone who uses her knowledge of social media and networking in order to bring awareness to projects that help and empower those in need. Even though many of us are affected by the weakened economy, one thing that never goes out of style is giving to others. For these reasons, I’m more than happy to re-introduce Sloane Berrent, who will tell us about how we can stop the spread of malaria and why giving really can be better than receiving. Oh, and her latest idea, “Cause Its My Birthday.”

“Cause Its My Birthday”

by Sloane Berrent

It all started with a crazy idea. Take the concept of a birthday week, universally celebrated by women everywhere with a myriad of activities, brunches and nights on the town, and turn it into an act of giving instead of getting. Use birthdays as a platform for social change. The nonprofit of choice? Netting Nations. Add in social media and two friend’s desire to inspire people around the country and you have Cause It’s My Birthday, a seven-day, seven-city, seven-party tour to raise money for malaria nets, with 100% of the proceeds going to the nets.

So that’s we did. Me, Sloane Berrent of TheCausemopolitan fame, but also a woman on a year-long journey to give back, which included the recent completion of a Kiva fellowship (featured on Twirlit here), and my good friend Doug Campbell (of Mindshare LA and the Tuxedo Travels). One day we were all together and realized we were turning 30 within days of each other and wanted to do something spectacular, but wanted it all to be about giving back. Because really when it comes down to it, there is nothing better than inspiring others to know how easy it can be to get involved with nonprofits or a fundraiser.

To put the wheels in motion, we first chose our cities: New York City for the kickoff on October 3, followed by Miami, New Orleans, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, and for the finale Los Angeles. Some of those cities we had strong networks, but some of them we did not. We decided to crowd source the planning and logistics of the events. Crowd sourcing? This basically meant we found a few people in each city to champion our cause. In cities like New York and Los Angeles, where we had a strong network already, this wasn’t too hard. We simply sent out a few emails and the ball was rolling. But for a few of the other cities, we barely knew anyone at all. We looked to social networks like Twitter and Facebook to connect with people who lived in those cities and get them involved. The Seattle party was a particular highlight. We had never even met any of the hosts before the night of the event. One was an avid reader of my blog who got a few friends together and planned the whole thing.

We turned the donations into a competition with each city battling against each other for the most donations. Within one week we raised over $14,000! We decided to keep the main donation tab open through October 31, 2009, because people are still finding out about the campaign and making donations, and each one takes us one step closer to our $20,000 goal. In fact, as of today we’re at $18,742, which means we have until the weekend to get that last $1200!

Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds, or 3,000 children every day. The malaria mosquitoes only come out at night, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., so having a bed net drastically decreases someone’s chances of infection. The total cost of a malaria net is $5, which is a Starbucks to you and me, but means everything to people in a developing country who live off of $1-2 dollars a day.

Each party had attendance of approximately 75 people with a $15 donation at the door while the website has had over 450 people donate from over 35 states and four countries with amounts ranging from $5 to $500. The idea is to start small, start anywhere. The response we received was incredible. The campaign runs through October 31, 2009. Won’t you join us with your donation and feel inspired to make an upcoming celebration in your household about giving? You’ll be glad you did.

Once again, here’s the link to “Cause Its My Birthday.” Thanks again for getting involved!

You may have read my previous review of the Superfood Acai, which is becoming all the rage amongst health-conscious consumers. It’s a fruit that is native to both Central and South America, and is rich in antioxidants, flavanoids and anthocyanins. As we all know, antioxidants, whether they’re consumed or applied topically, help to neutralize free radicals that cause premature aging. Acai berries are also loaded with healthy mono-saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamin C, and other polyphenols.

Recently, the health food company, Navitas Naturals, sent over their Organic Acai Powder for me to review and I was, well, super happy. They informed me that they actually transport the Acai berries immediately after harvesting where it is then hand-inspected for quality. The whole berries are then freeze-dried and low temperature milled to ensure maximum nutrient content. The Acai organic powder is also certified kosher and vegan and without any fillers.

Well, the first thing I did was take a small spoonful of this powder and proceed to eat it, which was NOT a good idea. This is powerful superfood at its finest and, therefore, I should’ve just added it to my morning smoothie, but I was just too excited.

I do not recommend eating this plain because it’s quite strong, but I did try it with a smoothie that tasted amazing. The recipe:

Acai Berry and Banana Smoothie

1 cup Almond milk

1 scoop of Navitas Naturals Organic Acai Powder

1 banana

Handful of ice cubes

I downed this smoothie in less than two minutes and it left me wanting more. Was it the strong, berry-like taste of the Acai powder mixed with the creaminess of the almond milk? Probably.

Did I mention that you can also mix this powder with Greek yogurt to make another berrylicious snack that is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins? You know … I’m actually craving another smoothie now.

For our latest Twirlit video interview, we were lucky to snag an interview with Savannah Auger, handbag/shoe designer of Libertas Designs. Oh did I mention that she's also a rock star?

We recently had a Twirlit Giveaway with Libertas Designs, a brand that was started by Savannah Auger after growing up amidst the design centers of Italy, England, and California. With her popular shoes and handbags, Auger manages to mix elegant style with a bit of feminine rock n’ roll. Her designs have been featured in Lucky Magazine, New York Magazine, Geniux, Allure Magazine, and several others.

For a fashion designer, Savannah Auger is refreshingly down-to-earth and humble. Not to mention that she also manages to be the lead singer of a band called the Oblivion Express. Recently she sat down with us to discuss following your goals and, yes, Savannah actually started off selling her designs from her car. No joke.

The Twirlit Crew kicked off Los Angeles Fashion Week with the Sjobeck Fashion Show at LIVE on Sunset. Check out the pictures from the show!

Sjobeck showed off their Spring 2010 collection at LIVE!onSunset this past weekend and their signature All-American, laid back luxury look was put on full display. Celebrity guests included Kyle Howard and LC Conrad, as well as a slew of the LA fashion industry.

My favorites were the women’s maxi-dresses and sweaters along with the men’s zippered shirts and sweaters. The easy breezy vibe of the entire fashion show, along with the quality pieces, made me want to chill out at the beach. (Even though it’s October!)

Check out the slideshow of the images below! And stay tuned for our video interview with Lani Lupton, one of Sjobeck’s designers, who spoke with us about the importance of quality, especially in these Recessionary times and … why you shouldn’t be a starving artist.
